The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.

Good morning everyone. It is a lovely day. I'm not spending it with my father, but I'll be thinking of him. He is a very special man.
Not much time this am, since I'm on my way to try a new church. Enjoy your day!

* * * * * * * * * * * Fathers Are Wonderful People
* * *Fathers are wonderful people too little understood,
* * *And we do not sing their praises as often as we should.....
* * *For, somehow, Father seems to be the man who pays the bills,
* * *While Mother binds up little hurts and nurses all the ills...
* * *And Father struggles daily to live up to "his image"
* * *As protector and provider and "hero of the scrimmage".....
* * *And perhaps that is the reason we sometimes get the notion
* * *That Fathers are not subject to the thing we call emotion.
* * *But if you look inside Dad's heart, where no one else can *see,
* * *You'll find he's sentimental and as "soft" as he can be.....
* * *But he's so busy every day in the grueling race of life,
* * *He leaves the sentimental stuff to his partner and his wife.
* * *But Fathers are just [i]wonderful[i] in a million diffrent ways,
* * *And they merit loving compliments an accolades of praise,
* * *For the only reason Dad aspires to fortune and success
* * *Is to make the family proud of him and to bring them happiness.
* * *And like our Heavenly Father, he's a guardian and a guide,
* * *Someone that we can count on to be always on our side.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * Helen Steiner Rice
* * * *To all of our husbands and fathers, may your day be blessed with the love of family. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/grouphug.gif</span></span>

Ipara, glad to know we have another conservative here in eastern NC. I used to work in Wilson and the company held all of its training sessions at a hotel in RM. The funny part of eastern NC is that almost everyone is a democrat, but when you talk to them they are very conservative and in national elections a good portion of them vote republican. I didn't get finished with all of the house work yesterday so I guess I'd better get started. Hope all of you have a wonderful day.

"Shed Day" isn't over yet. *We battled the rain, thunder, lightening, and more rain bucketing down! *At one point my shed had no walls but still a roof with all of my things still inside--or at least under the roof--when more rain came bucketing down! *Finally we reached a point where we got the new walls on, new tarpaper on the roof and half shingled when the rain came with no hope of it stopping. *So the wife of one of the fellows invited us all to their lovely home for supper which lasted until very, very late as all were so tired.
I'm so tired that I'm not at church this morning!
Saber, thinking about you and that dental work. *I have some ahead of me. *I'll be travelling to a city west of me to the Dental College for the work though. *

Hello! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif
Busy morning here so far. I made an early morning trip to WalMart to gather an assortment of little things. It was supposed to be a quick trip but by the time I made two complete circuits of a "Superstore", ran into two friends I haven't seen for awhile and got through the line it wasn't very quick.
Tried to call my Stepdad but he is out gadding about visiting relatives. I'm thankful he can still do this at his age.
Served hubby a continental type breakfast and the grown up kiddos will be by later to wish him well. Things are right on track around here. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/f_rose.gif
Yes, that's right. Click Submit and don't touch Reset. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/angel.gif
Meet the Press is on right now. A couple of the better Bishops, etc. were on a little earlier. One of them thinks the church has been changed forever and another felt that all Bishops involved in reassigning pedophile priests should resign. *That would be approximately 2/3 of US Bishops but it sounds appropriate to me.

Here is a link to the page about Who is John Doe #2? (http://www.whoisjohndoe2.co m/) I have no idea who's page this is or how credible any of it is but it's interesting.
It seems that the Benevolence organization had some connection to OKC.
http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/red_eyes.gif (yawn) Happy Fathers Day everyone! Well, 4 hours of sleep later on hard astroturf in the Ice Palace, I am back in Sarasota. Now, Terri, I am going to type this again slowly. I slept over at the arena because it was a Scout activity. There were about 100 other people there too, consisting of scouts and their family members. Terrible game, naturally, with the Storm losing to the NJ Gladiators 55-33 http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif but they had a terrible record going in, so no surprise. They did show Snow Dogs (the movie) on the big screen, so that was nice. My kids had a good time and you couldn't tell they only slept from 3 AM to 7 AM (even us whippersnappers aren't as resiliant as we used to be). But I am here, and after cracking my back a few times, relatively as good as new! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
RIM, my orders in the foxhole were also to shoot first and ask questions later. But my philosophy also included take no prisoners, unless they want to be taken http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mdr11.gif I will let you figure that one out. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif
Well, upon my arrival back in paradise (sometimes called Sarasota) this morning, my wife did make me a pot of coffee and the kids and I bagels and eggs. What a good wife! Took the 2 year old in the pool and pushed him around in his inner tube thingy. That was fun! He is taking swimming lessons (for babies of course) and learned how to blow bubbles.
I am enjoying all the Fathers Day poems and readings this morning. Being one three times over myself, I think it is just great that dads have the recognition this day affords, and although I get to see my kids every day with few exceptions (like rarely traveling without them), I know that in a lot of families, this is a special day where children, even grown ones, get to communicate with their father or see him,and that may be a rare occasion.
Saber, :1luvu: my dearest buddy ole pal http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/f_rose.gif, you need to go back and re-read the post with the hugs. You will see I saved the best for last (ignore that little edit note at the bottom) http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Well, off to spend more of the day with my kids. You will excuse me if I don't log on again until tonight, when everyone goes to bed. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Dads, have a great day. You earned it!

Enjoy your day, FLGuy! The kids are so much fun at their age and Daddy's as so special to them.
We had a horrible weekend in Ontario not so far away from us. Four in a family were murdered and then the murderer killed himself...and he came all the way from Wisconsin to do it. Apparently a romance gone sour.

Hope all dear fathers are having a good day being waited on like a King, but of course you all are already used to that, right? *
We are having a busy day. *Of course I went all out for lunch today--fried chicken (we ARE from THE South, ya know), squash casserole (a family favorite), rice, red eye gravy, black eyed peas, and garlic toast. *Have I confused anyone yet? *I'm a yankee married to a southern guy and most of the time I cook yankeeish, but for special occasions, I submit to "y'alls" ways!
Sounds like everyone is having a good day. *I heard on the radio today that we are definitely going to "get rid of" Sadaam Hussein. *Hope it's true.

We just got done cooking/grilling brunch on the new grill that our two boys and I bought for "BIG DADDY"! I'm telling ya....these new fan-dangled contraptions! This grill is "infared" and it cooks everything just about the minute it hits the grill....I kid you not! We had turkey bacon, pancakes, scrambled eggs and turkey sausage! Unbelievable! 2+ inch filets cook in like 6-8 minutes! Says it cooks at 1400 degrees. I've never tasted such juicy, smooth, tender steaks in my life. It's pricey guys, but it's THE BEST!
The http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sun1.gif is shining....74 degrees....kids are now swimming at the neighborhood pool, we're feeding fish, reading the paper and chilling on the porch. What more could one want in life?

Ahhh...another step in the Father's Day celebration has been completed. The kids and families were over and paid homage to Dad. We had dessert since some had a later committment for dinner. Guess I'll take dear ol Dad out to eat when he's ready.
Floridaguy! Do you think you could http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/compute.gif that just a little slower. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *Still don't see why anybody wants to sleep on the floor of the ice arena in a sleeping bag but I guess that's just the way whippersnappers are. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinking.gif
Hi Aberfoyle! I watched a lady buy a big case of your water this morning.
lpara, I want to come to your house for dinner. I like both pot roast and fried chicken although not necessarily at the same time. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/JEDIpinkietoo.gif
http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif to Angelus and Saber! I hope I'm not missing anyone cause I wouldn't like that. RIM has got me all excited about somebody being arrested for the fire. So, her name is Terri. Hmmmmmm....... I haven't had the news on since the Sunday morning shows so I've missed that.
My son in law and I were just trying to come up with a profile (yes we profile and he's even a liberal) of the person who might have started it. We didn't consider a woman and we leaned toward young men, maybe even a teenager on a woodsie. Just goes to show you we don't belong in law enforcement.
Terri dearest, The reason someone would sleep on the floor of an arena in a sleeping back, is because it was a scout event. It is amazing how much time true scouters (adult leaders) will put in and the things they do for the boys in their packs or troops. (And you know, for some of this stuff it takes being a whippersnapper; I see lots of young parents, but not a whole lot of grandparents doing this stuff. Of course, I will be different; i.e., the perennial whippersnapper! Or just a perennial?)
RIM, don't think too hard, ya never know when these things are a limited time offer. BTW, I thought there were LAWS against being a vegematarian in Hardee County. You had better go out and eat your neighbors (cows) before someone turns you in! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mdr11.gif soy turkey-http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mr_yuk.gif I like it when people in the Peace Valley, like Dr. Barbara Carlton go turkey shootin and give away a bird or two!

Did they ever determine if this Terry person set the fires on purpose or if it was negligence? *Not that it changes anything ~ but I'd hate to think an employee would do this intentionally. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif *
I didn't find sleeping in the arena to be the most exciting thing I have done in a while. I won't do it again, because last night made twice. It is not what I wanted to do for Father's Day that was important, it was what my sons wanted to do "all the other kids dads are going!" Besides, I didn't really spend Father's Day there, just the night before and early morning of. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/JEDIpinkietoo.gif
Now here I thought for some strange reason that the foxhole was gender neutral. Was I mistaken? Conservababes need conservadudes for discourse and related phenomena. Besides, I never charge right into a foxhole, I only carefully test the water and put my feet in one rung at a time....Some people's feet are always warm, even on ice. They are great to have in tough situations, say if you are in a foxhole or something....;)

RIM--we're about five and a half hours from Greenville. *Wish we were MUCH closer--it would make it a lot easier in August-December and January-May! *I still can't think about two being gone this year! *Sounds like you have a nice husband! *Handy one too!
Saber--sounds like a microwave grill! *Cool http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif never heard of it before--learn something in here every day! *74 degrees--I'm jealous!!
Aberfoyle--hope you are having a good day! *Rested up? *My husband converted our "shed" into an office a couple of years ago. *That was quite a project, but it sounds like yours is much more extensive!
Angelus, hope you're feeling better! *Noon? *That'll cure what ails ya!
Terri, you can come have dinner with us any time!! You name the time, and I'll have the red carpet out! *BTW--Everyone can come--we'll have our cake and punch too!
FLguy, just read a neat article on the Scouts--You are a good man to do all you do, not only for the Scouts, but for your own kids! *All our floors are hardwood, and I could not sleep on any of them for 1 minute! *But, I guess I would try if my kids wanted me to.
Bored ya all long enough--I've been trying to post and watch old Mary Tyler Moore videos with the family at the same time--VERY HARD! *So forgive if there are typos or inaneos!
