I am America
Written by: Carolyn Hileman

I am the woman who cleans the floors at those big offices, each night I clean it until it shines, I am the mechanic who tunes up your car, fixes your flats and tells you what rattles are ok. I am the guy who digs the ditches, so the water will flow off the parking lot, as it should. I am the single mother who works three jobs to feed and house my children, there are times they see their baby sitter more than me. I have slept in my car so as not to be late for work, all so I would not have to ask for help. I am the cop on the beat, I could have chosen another career that made more money. But I chose to protect my community. I am the soldier who fights for your freedom, I have never asked for anything in return, but your respect. I have seen my friends blown to pieces, seen more death and destruction, than most of you will ever see in your life. It is Ok, I chose this life so you would never have to see it.

I am the sacker at the grocery store, I am old and slow and I know I anger a lot of you. I used to be much faster, but age takes a lot out of you, I would be sitting at home enjoying retirement, but I can’t afford it. I am the man who paints your walls, the guy who cleans your sewer line, the woman who washes your clothes, the man who washes your car, I am an American. I have heard that if you do not have a big house, a great income you are somehow less of an American. Well if that is what it takes to be an American, a big house, nice clothes a fancy car. Then I guess I just won’t qualify. *

You know it never occurred to me that you would have to meet a certain income level to be an American. I did not know that your big gigantic flags were anymore important than my little one. I never dreamed that having pride in what I have accomplished was silly and I needed to reach much higher to be an American. I thought being an American was a spirit, a never die attitude, a firm belief in the principles that make us a great nation. I suppose I was wrong, maybe we weren’t all created equals, because if we were no one would say you are less of an American.

You know I can’t help but think of September 11, 2001, and I have to wonder if there were other people in those buildings besides bankers and investors. I seem to remember that we lost a few janitors, elevator people, waiters and waitress’s that day as well. So does that mean we should mourn their death less, does that mean they were less than American. It has been said that on that day everyone was American, No color, and no nationality, just Americans. America was born of men and women who worked in the fields and factories. The people who taught themselves a trade, and used it to feed their families, I don’t remember reading in the history books about any bankers, movie stars, singers, movie producers or investment counselors.

Yes, we all make choices, some choose to make a lot of money and look down on others. Some choose to make a lot of money, and use it to put people to work. Some choose to make less money, instead knowing they can be there for their families. And some choose to make less money in order to protect our country, our homes and our families. Some choose to teach our children, some couldn’t afford a choice. Some of these lesser Americans serve you breakfast, lunch or supper. Make your bed for you while you are on your vacation or business trips. Some of these lesser Americans are stopping that drunk driver from killing some innocent kids out for the summer using daddy’s car. Some of these lesser Americans are serving over seas, some of them won’t be coming home.

American has nothing to do with how much you make, it has a lot more to do with how big of a heart you have. *It is the grandparents who have taken their grandchildren to raise, or taken in their entire family because daddy can’t find a job. It is the single working mother or father, the little old lady down the street. It is the cook, the cashier, the cab driver and the millionaire. *America is a big mixture of all cultures, races and creeds, it is as colorful as the flag itself. It is the hope of the world, a foundation of freedom, it is based on equality and honesty. It is not a piece of paper that has famous signatures, yes they may have started America, but it was the people who fought for it. It was the people who made it strong. While that document served as a road map, it did not fight for our freedom, it did not build the cities and towns, it did not feed the many. And even though the writers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were very educated, it in no way made them any better than the soldier who fought so those documents could survive. For I think each and every one of them educated or not when they bled it was of the same color.

So let us each, no matter the race, creed or education be grateful that we are Americans. Let us not forget those who chose to protect us, for limited pay and benefits. For if they had not, who would have. If everyone strove to be rich, to have that big house on the hill. Where would we find the cooks, the cashiers, police, firemen, and soldiers? Who would make sure your room was nice and clean in the motels, who would serve your food? We should all be grateful for those who chose to make our lives a bit more comfortable. *

GOD Bless you Carolyn,
Your words are very potent.
AMERICAN'S ARE FOR THE MOST PART THE "COMMON" PERSON.
I give God my thanks everyday for the people who made this country what it was ment to be.
But, it is sad, true but sad, that it only takes a small minority to start chewing away at the coners of our Declaration and Constitution.
WHY DON'T MORE PERSONS IN THIS COUNTRY FIND THEIR VOICE AND STAND AGAINST THE TYRANICAL ATTEMPTS TO REMOVE OUR FOUNDING FATHER-GOD?

Carolyn,
GREAT SITE, GREAT IDEA'S, EASY VOTING.

bUT, THE BATTLE HAS BEEN WAGING FOR SOME TIME TO KEEP GOD AND OUR JUDEAO/CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY AS THE FOUNDATION OF THIS NATION.
<u>I AM FED UP WITH THE LIBERAL ATTEMPTS TO TAKE GOD OUT OF THIS COUNTRY AND OUT OF THE SITE OF OUR CHILDREN, WHILE TEACHING THEM ISLAM,BUDDISM,ATHIES M AND ANY THING ELSE THEY CAN COME UP WITH TO DESTROY THIS &quot;ONE NATION UNDER GOD&quot;.

Quote[/b] ]If not for these great Americans, some of you high and mighty Americans might have to do something for yourself.

Perhaps I am out of line....but this last sentence rubbed me the wrong way. I was full of support and agreed with everything you said...about everyone, regardless of race, creed or position, were Americans.

Then the last sentence...........c ertainly stands in stark contrast to the rest of the beautiful writing.

I have had a lot of people tell me that, but that is the way it came to me and I dare not mess with it. I will tell you what I tell them if you are not one of those then it shouldn't bother you. But the fact is there are a lot of those out there and they need that little kick in the butt to let them know they are not any more important than anyone else. sorry if I offended you.

What, exactly, is &quot;one of those&quot;?

You know the kind, those who look down there noses at people because they don't have THE AMERICAN DREAM by their standards. As a matter of fact it was one of THOSE it was directed at when it was written.. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I guess I don't know &quot;the kind&quot;. Are you saying someone who has dreams and goals higher than yours? Are they &quot;high and mighty&quot; because you perceive that they have passed you on some definitive scale of position that you have in your mind?

I'm sorry...I guess I'm not following..........

You really don't get it do you? I am speaking of the people who think you must aspire to be like them or you are scum. I am very happy where I am in life, I don't have a big house but I love the one I have and wouldn't trade it for anything. But according to this person I and others like me are simply trash and not to be concerned with. We don't reach his level, we are unimportant air gaspers. And yes, I am telling what he said. To these people it does not matter if you are happy where you are at, you don't drive a BMW and you are nothing. That is the those I was referring to.

This where I LOVE telling the story about one of my uncles who passed away a few years ago. He lived in a small, two story home, on a farm, drove an old '68 Ford pickup, wore flannel shirts, jeans and worn out boots all the time. You would have thought he was barely scratching a living.
When he passed away, the estate settlement showed his liquid assets at over $8.7mil., his land amassed over twenty thousand acres, he held controlling interest in a bank, and a major share of the Mesa Corporation, along with a number of other business ventures.
Wealth and poverty are relative subjects. I have seen wealthy men poor in character, impoverished men posses a wealth of character, and vice-versa. I have also known many who have six figure incomes, drive two new Mercedes-Benz, have a brand new boat, an eight thousand square foot home, put their children in private school, and STILL have to rely on a monthly allowance from their parents just so they can buy groceries and pay their utilities.
What, by definition, is wealth? Is it massive amounts of materialism? A large income? Large amounts of investments and bank accounts? It depends on who you ask. My definition of wealth is measured in a man's character.
My father taught me from a very early age, &quot;A man's value is his word and a firm handshake. If a man cannot be counted on for either, that man is worthless.&quot;
When I was a child, I thought his analogy was as silly as it could get. As an adult, I have grown to realize that old man was as smart as they come.

IMHO, true wealth begins in the heart and spreads from there to all those around you. Material possessions are not necesssarily the true measure of wealth. One man's trash if often another man's treasure.

If my success in life is to be measured by what I drive or where I live, then I have sadly failed in sharing the wealth in my heart. None of my friends care one bit about my wealth or lack thereof. If there are those that look down on me for one reason or another, then they are not my friend and their opinion means nothing to me.

There's an old saying, can't remember where I heard it, but it goes like this, &quot;there ain't no U-Haul's in the grave yard.&quot; The only thing you are taking with you is what you have learned while you are here.

So when someone refers to &quot;those people&quot; who have their nose in the air, I say, who cares! They put their pants on one leg at a time just like the rest of us. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I've met several people who are members of this forum and I can unequivocally say, they are the very best. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif They are probably all &quot;wealthier&quot; in possessions than I, but there isn't one of them who I believe would look down on me because of it.

As Bill so eloquently put it, we don't always know someone's material worth, but it sticks out like a sore thumb if they are morally, spiritually and philosophically bankrupt.

OK. I've &quot;got it&quot;.

You're speaking of snobs....pompous asses to be specific.

As RIM said, WHO CARES?

I guess the problem I was having is that you were equating the snobbery to wealth. I can assure you that snobbery and p.a.'s (for short) exist in every socio-economic strata! It's a p.a.'s insecure way of making themselves better (in their eyes) to bash someone else. I simply laugh at the losers and move on.

This probably is not right on point, but I'll share something I read from Robert Grave's I Claudius &amp; Claudius The God two-book series. I think it's from the latter.

There are four types of men that stand out from the many mediocrities: The virtuous with golden hearts, the rogues with stony hearts, the virtuous with stony hearts and the rogues with hearts of gold. Emporer Claudius then goes on to say that the last category are most interesting.

But being most interesting, doesn't necessarily make such people the best companions. For this, I find think seeking the first category the wisest choice. But finding them is difficult. I think that we tend to see the outward things and never know most people well enough to see what's really within. To have even minimum success, I need to exert myself to get and stay close to Him who is the only One to truly know what's inside. Only He can give the gift of such discernment to mortal people.
