BURLINGTON, VT (Talon News) -- Howard Dean, following a poll his campaign took among Dean supporters, announced on Saturday that he would forgo public campaign financing for his presidential bid, angering Democrat rivals and breaking a pledge he had taken earlier in the year.
"Today by an 85-15 margin, the people who made this campaign have voted to decline public financing," Dr. Dean said.
"We support public financing, but the unabashed actions of this president to thwart our democratic processes with a flood of special interests money have us forced to abandon a broken system," Dean said after announcing that he would break an earlier pledge he had taken to abide by public campaign finance principles.
Dean praised the vote, terming it his declaration of independence from special interest money.
