After moving from the center of the 2000 presidential election controversy in Florida to the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Katherine Harris says she "seriously" is considering vying for the Senate seat left wide open by the announced retirement of Democratic Sen. Bob Graham.

Harris, a rising star among Republicans and a villain to Democrats, said she is weighing a tough choice for her and her family, the Orlando Sentinel reported

Ah, Laurie, very good. This is exactly what rumor I was referring to in the Precinct post yesterday. I do hope Matt is paying attention. So what does this mean? It means that when Katherine is done "deciding" she is going to run (which I am pretty darn sure she is going to do), then it means I have 10 months left to run for the state representative seat that will open up as a result of the trickle down affect in the Sarasota area (i.e., my current state representative has made it known she intends to run for Katherine's U.S. House seat if it became open next year). *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif *I better get busy drafting my fundraising letter next week......

Here is a related AP story in Florida.... looks like she is running to me.... http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

"I never thought the senator would not run again," she said.

And while Harris insisted Friday that she's in the House to stay for the time being, she wouldn't rule out a Senate bid either.

"From day one I was told to make sure you never say never," Harris said.

"It's an honor that people are encouraging me to seriously consider it," she added.

Who cares about her politics?! I want the Katherine Harris Fashion Calendar!!! Talk about a great way to raise campaign funds.

I don't know what her age is; but she might beat Bush at fundraising with a Swimsuit Edition....

and the nice thing is, if KH doesn't run, all you would have to do is repaint the 4 to a 6. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin2.gif

Howard Troxler
St. Petersburg Times

Dear God:

Please, please, please let Katherine Harris run for the U.S. Senate.

Not to sound ungrateful or anything, but things down here have been a little dull so far in the Senate-race department.

The most interesting guy in the race is Johnnie Byrd, who has entertained us as speaker of the state House. But he is interesting in the sense of, "What law won't he ram through in exchange for campaign money?"

A Harris vs. Byrd fight would be spectacular. It would be a case of relentless force meeting shameless object. It would be a thing of beauty, to be studied by scientists.

Troxler is a typical liberal St. Pete Times reporter, one of the most leftist papers in Florida. However, I did appreciate two paragrpahs of the article.

Quote[/b] ]There is another guy from Miami, a congressman named Peter Deutsch, whom I once watched shamelessly shake down a lobbyist for campaign money at a bar in Tallahassee. The poor victim kept pointing to me and saying, "Have you met my friend from the newspaper? You know, the newspaper?" Deutsch was so focused that he just nodded at me and kept shaking the guy down. I left before Deutsch could hold him up by his ankles and rattle the quarters out of his pockets. *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Quote[/b] ]You don't think Harris could muster an attack against Betty Castor? Duh-wee. Her nickname among Republican gleeful political consultants is "Betty Al-Arian." They are referring to the Islamic think tank that Castor allowed at the University of South Florida, with an unhappy conclusion. Kinda hard to downplay giving safe harbor to, you know, the future chairman of the Islamic Jihad.

This stuff is too good to pass up. I wonder if Howie realizes that whether or not Katherine runs or not, he brought up some excellent points for whomever the Republican candidates in fact are. FYI, rumor as of this morning has it that KH is under heavy pressure to NOT run by the administration and other DC types. The theory being that she would be a "lightning rod" that would turn out a lot more Dems in Florida (to defeat her) in a year when GW would just as soon keep Florida's election profile next year not any higher than it is already going to be. The other candidates would not add that extra incentive for more Dems to vote than would have purely for the presidential election. *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif *However, I have learned that Katherine will do whatever she is going to do, not because anyone in DC asks her to or not. *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
