California
Well, here we are, approaching the deadline for that doggoned recall in California. *California, if you know anything about it, is a pretty big state. *It’s also the only state that has said they wish to not wait until the next election to get rid of the idiot they have now. *Of course, I don’t really mean to say Gray Davis is stupid, just that the people of California think he is at least financially stupid. *See, under his watch, the state has gone to hell in a hand-basket financially.
But you all already know this, don’t you? *So what’s the deal with California? *Why all the commotion over a simple election? *Well, simply put, it is not simple. *This is not a normal election year. *Democrats of course say the recall is unfair, that they have to wait to vote against people they don’t like, so why don’t we? *And you know something, that actually makes sense. *Until you think about it.
See, there is usually not a huge support for a recall, either statewide or nationwide. *Usually, the official is not so bad, that the people cannot stand it anymore. *Usually, people don’t make that stupid of a decision. *But this is what has happened in California.
Now, as of Monday, 9/29/03, Arnold Schwarzenegger is the man to beat. *This means that Arnold, as a Republican, could conceivably become the next governor of California. *Terminator Governor . . . *It has a nice ring to it. *Now, on social issues, Arnold is definitely not a conservative. *His conservative attributes lie in the socio-economic aspects of politics only. *However, there is hope.
Rudy Giuliani was supposedly a liberal on social issues, yet he stayed pretty much out of the way. *He had opinions, but didn’t do a whole heck of a lot to make social liberalism run rampant. *In fact, he even cleaned up the streets, something liberals have a tough time doing while they are soft on crime.
So, while Ahh-nold may be a social liberal, there is hope that he will follow Rudy’s steps and have opinions, but not enforce them.
But social issues are not on the minds of Californians. *All they care about is the money. *More accurately, the state budget. *If Arnold can turn it around, great. *The GOP stands to gain a lot of ground because of that. *But if not, we could be in for a long, bumpy ride in which we lose steam very fast.
That is why I am not sure I like the recall. *Part of me says Davis should stay, and let California collapse. *That way, we could all see what unhindered Democratic rule does. *But then, a part of me says that Arnold as governor has a good possibility to boost the GOP as well.
Imagine the campaign slogan the GOP could use if Arnold fixes California:
“The GOP can terminate deficit the DNC gives you.”
