Hope somebody knows the answer to this one.

I recently installed Windows XP Pro. *Since then, I have been plagued with this pop up called "Messenger service." It comes up every few minutes trying to sell me something. *Usually, they are pushing a pop up stopper that will end this kind of thing. *I think they call it endads or something like that.

Thing is, I have a pop up stopper that pretty much eliminates all pop ups except this one, most annoying one. *Is anyone familiar with this and do you have a solution for getting rid of this thing?

Blue, I get the "endads" pop up on my puter at home all the time. I don't know how to stop it but I will look into over the weekend when I can spend some time on it. If I come up with something I will let you know. Mom.

Here's your friendly computer tech AZWW to the rescue.

Click Start
Click RUN
Type MSCONFIG
A new box will appear, click on the "Startup" tab. *

Your problem lies in here. *One of those clickable items is launching an ad-bot. *The ones you do NOT want to uncheck are:

CCregvfy
ccApp
realsched
qtask
ctfmon
... anything with NAV (norton antivirus)
... anything pertaining to McAfee
... if you use MSN Messenger, don't click off MSNMSGR.
... any recognizable program that you like to have start when you boot

Other than that, you can usually safely UNCLICK every box in your startup menu besides the above. *One will likely be the culprit. *A dead giveaway is if it has no name in the Startup Item or Command column. *

If you DO unclick the rest of them besides the ones I listed above, you'll likely see a boost in your computer's performance and at the same time, get rid of the ads. *The reason your popup blocker doesn't catch it is because your computer is requesting the information through a program that runs whenever you start your computer. *Sneaky advertising.

Once you are done, click APPLY, and then click OK. You'll have to restart - but you'll do so without the annoying ads because you disabled the program causing the ads. *When you DO restart, you'll get a box that says that you modified your startup menu. *This is normal - you got rid of memory-eating junk you likely never use. *Click "Don't show this again" and then "Okay". *Then you're done.

Doing the above, you might unclick and disable your popup stopper - no worries. If it used to launch automatically, you'll have to launch it manually. If you do want to restart the popup stopper, just launch it from the Programs menu, and it will re-enable itself to every time you start your computer.

Let me know if you need help or have questions.

AZ:

Hey, thanks a bunch! *I saved it to Word and will try it out a little later.

Now if you could only come up with a program that will allow me to use all those interesting emoticons inside my mailer (Eudora), I would be quite content. *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Wolfie - thanks so much for the help. I get so sick of those stupid little endad pop ups. I will print out your instructions and see if I can do it. I get nervous about doing any maintenance stuff because I'm not that computer savvy but if I follow your instructions, I should be ok. I hope. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Actually, if you copy and paste them individually, you'd do ok. Click on the emoticons, like you would normally, then copy/paste. I know it works with Outlook. I used to use Eudora, and though its less likely to get hacked, I still prefer Outlook.

Don't be nervous, be happy. You'll be ad-free soon. I re-read them to make sure they were dummy-proof. All you're doing is disabling programs that launch themselves without your permission. Some, like anti-virus, is good. Some, like ads, are bad. I'm confident on this.

Seriously, it's a piece of cake, and if you can see through the Dems and their mindless blather, your IQ certainly allows you the ability to do this. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

There's nothing wrong with those programs, and they are good for the novice user. I agree, Jonessa, good post.

However, they do take up space, and some of them run when you start Windows - which takes up, admittedly, a small amount of space. But even pop-up blocker uses a few megs of RAM at ALL times, and Spybot doesn't work until you run it through like 6 times. I just finished doing that on a friend's computer and it still didn't get rid of all of them.

There's no fool proof way. I just disable them as they appear. Adding more programs to scour your system will eventually bog it down. My http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twocents.gif

The google toolbar now has a pop-up blocker too. I haven't had one pop-up since I installed the latest version with it on the toolbar http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

I actually installed a few programs that come with spyware (which causes popups) to test Pop Up Stopper and some of those cleaner programs.

Not bad. I'm no longer bogged down with all this spyware, but some of this stuff will NOT go away.

What killed me was an offer to get "emoticons" (some of the same ones found here) for my email. BIG mistake. I installed 66 spyware components into my system, and finally got rid of the stupid additional toolbar. Aikes! I can't imagine what my "junk email" account looks like. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
