BERLIN (Reuters) - Hollywood star Johnny Depp (news) said on Wednesday the United States was a stupid, aggressive puppy and he would not live there until the political climate changed.

The 40-year-old actor, who stars in the "Pirates of the Caribbean," told the German news magazine Stern he was happier staying in the south of France with his wife, the French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, (http://img.search.yahoo.com /search/images?n=20&ei=UTF-8&c=news_photos&p=%22Vanessa+Paradis %22) and their two children.

"America is dumb, it's like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," he said.

"My daughter is four, my boy is one. I'd like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out," said the star of the off-beat films "Edward Scissorhands" and "Dead Man."

Depp slammed George W. Bush's administration for its criticism of French opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq ( French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (http://www.info-france-usa.org/news/briefing/us290803.asp#4)).

"I was ecstatic they re-named 'French Fries' as 'Freedom Fries'. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots," he told Stern.

I do not understand media, etc even repeating what these actors say, where did they get their authority to spout off publicly and in other countries about something they obviously know nothing about. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Denying any anti-American sentiment on his part, actor Johnny Depp said on Thursday that quotes attributed to him as likening the United States to a "dumb puppy" were inaccurate and taken out of context.
"I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it," Depp said in a statement released by his Los Angeles-based publicist. "It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it. I have benefited greatly from the freedom that exists in my country and for this I am eternally grateful."

Depp, currently starring in the swashbuckling film "Pirates of the Caribbean," issued the statement a day after the German news magazine Stern published an interview in which he ridiculed Washington's confrontation with France, where he lives, over the U.S. war in Iraq.
The magazine quoted the actor as saying "America is ... like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive." He was further quoted as saying he wanted his children to "see America as ... a broken toy" that they should explore, get the feel of, then "get out."

Explaining his comments a day later, Depp he had been using a metaphor that was taken "radically out of context," adding, "There was no anti-American sentiment."

"What I was saying was that, compared to Europe, America is a very young country and we are still growing as a nation," he said. "My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected, or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent."
His spokeswoman added that the Kentucky-born Depp, 40, lives in the south of France with his family because his wife, actress-singer Vanessa Paradis, is French.

LOS ANGELES -- Johnny Depp said he intended no "anti-American sentiment" in comparing the nation to a dumb puppy and blamed news reports for misrepresenting his opinions.

Depp, star of the summer hit movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," apologized in a statement to those "who were offended, affected or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent." Stern, the German magazine that interviewed the actor, stood by its story....

Stern magazine news editor Hans-Peter Junker said Friday that Depp's quotes were "not taken out of context."

"Stern regrets that Johnny Depp is being criticized for his outspoken remarks in his homeland," Junker said. "Stern stands by its account."

Depp spends much of his time in the south of France with his companion, Vanessa Paradis, and their two children. According to the Stern article, Depp said he couldn't see himself paying more than short visits to his Los Angeles residence in the present political climate.

Johnny Depp gets paid by American (film) Corporations to appear in their movies then takes his salary and spends it in France. So, wouldn't you think that if he's bashing the U.S. but getting paid with U.S. dollars that those same company's would cease to employ him? Of course not because of his box office draw. The only thing you can do as Americans, is boycott his movies and hit him in the wallet.

Other than that, I say take away his American citizenship and turn down his subsequent request for a work visa. That'll show him.

I'm with ya Mom, but sadly it can't happen. *If you are a native born American citizen, you cannot be stripped of it. Neither can you lose it permanently even if you renounce it. *Even then, you can always regain it.

Anyway, there is one advantage to having him as a citizen. We can tax the crap outa him! *He may live in France, but that does not get him out of paying income taxes. *If he's not a citizen, we can't tax him except for his earnings while in the U.S. * We just have to be resigned to the fact that we have to live with ungrateful idiots. *He won't get any of my bux!

That article was a desparate spin by his publicity manager to stem the backlash from his statements. He's married to a French woman and has made whole series of movies in which he portrays weird, sick and twisted characters. Perhaps this was not really acting, but type-casting. In any case, he can stay in France, pay their absurd tax rates and raise his kids to be US haters. I for one, will never pay to go and see one of his movies again. We should send some angry email to Disney too!
