OTTAWA -- The Ontario government is renewing calls for a North American security perimeter and will lobby U.S. officials to enter into talks about the controversial issue.
Public Security Minister Bob Runciman said yesterday he believes the perimeter -- which critics fear would threaten Canada's sovereignty -- could have prevented five Middle Eastern men from slipping into the country and into the U.S. before Christmas.
"We're going to turn up the volume on this issue," said Runciman, adding his government supports the "beginnings of a discussion with the United States on the creation of a North American security perimeter."
He also confirmed that Ottawa is negotiating with the province to find space to house migrants who arrive in Canada without proper papers, but wouldn't reveal where.
