The cover story in this week's Newsweek is entitled "The End of the South." Some of the story's observations ring true enough. Yet the tone of the piece, and its accompanying photos, paint an oversimplified "black and white" portrait of a land that is actually -- like most everywhere else -- a colorful mix of the flattering and the not-so flattering.
The main piece was written by award-winning writer Christopher Dickey, the son of the late, famed poet and novelist James Dickey, he of "Deliverance" fame.
Christopher Dickey is gifted. But the glasses with which he chose to view his native land for this article were tinted with preconceptions. His knowledge of the modern South and its politics is limited.

Yes, the south is full of racist rednecks...but I seem to remember some of the worst race riots took place in the north (Detroit & Chicago)& California (Watts District). Of course, I'm white & from the south, so my viewpoint is probably skewed.
Wellll, the KKK did NOT originate in the South, but in the Midwest....Indiana. Up until 8 years ago, Dubuque IOWA had an active, vocal and CROSS BURNING KKK.
I lived in Appalachia for two years as a youngster, North Carolina. My mother was Catholic and she raised cain with the Archbishop 60 miles away to get a small Catholic church built. WE had a cross burned on our lawn, Folks, not cuz we were Black, but because we were CATHOLIC.
OH, I feel a rant coming on....I'll stop here...

Newsweek and Christopher Dickey should take note of the fact that none of the states seeking to ban affirmative action are located in the "South". Stereotyping the populace of any geographic area, via selective verbal or physical "snapshots", is disingeneous at best. Is it a requisite that liberals be out-of-touch with reality? Perhaps so. :2cents2:
For RadioWoman:
The original Ku Klux Klan was created in the aftermath of the American Civil War by six educated, middle-class Confederate veterans from Pulaski, Tennessee on December 24, 1865.
The second Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1915 in Atlanta with a new anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic, and anti-Semitic agenda. The bulk of the founders were from an Atlanta-area organization calling itself the Knights of Mary Phagan that had organized around the Leo Frank trial.

studebaker51. Come on over to Baidwin county in Alabama, and I will buy you a cup of coffee. The South is not changing. It has been the same since I can remember, and I am 81. I have lived here and in Texas for 30 years before coming back here to Robertsdale , to finish my time. Everything is about the same here, however we have got a few yankees[snowbirds] coming down every winter, and some like it well enough to stay, so I guess it is not too bad.I love it down here on the coast, except when one of those hurricanes comes calling, but you have to take the good with the bad. I know you got hammered when Katrina came through.A friend of mine sent me some pictures he took about 150 north of the coast, and that was the worst cloud I believe I have ever seen. If you get over this way, call me at 2519471933, and we will have a cup or a beer if you like.Elmer
