Undoing America's Ethanol Mistake
By SEN. KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON - IBD

The Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman once said, "One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results."

When Congress passed legislation to greatly expand America's commitment to biofuels, it intended to create energy independence and protect the environment.

But the results have been quite different. America remains equally dependent on foreign sources of energy, and new evidence suggests that ethanol is causing great harm to the environment.

*The lead-in blurb for this piece says it all. With liberals, intentions are everything and results are unimportant.

At their conventions this year in St. Paul and Denver, both parties should resolve that the Iowa caucuses should be scheduled last in the 2012 priamary season.

That will give the pols three years to think up some new way to pander for votes when the next presidential sweepstakes begins.

One thing that I have YET to see mentioned in all articles like this, are the subsidies "farmers," (read landowners of mass acreage in potential or actual farming areas) are STILL being paid to NOT grow anything.

What if these would be farmers lost the subsidies to NOT farm and HAD to farm to make money? MILLIONS of acres would be utilized to grow crops or feed and farm dairy cows, or just grow the corn to make the ethanol that's really NO answer.

I'm in favor of rolling back anything that looks like a susidy whether it comes in the form of a tax break like in the energy bill or a cash payment like a lot of the farm subsidies or as a tariff such as we use to artificially jack up the price of sugar.

Jack

As Rush Limbaugh stated on his show, yesterday, 4/25/08, "the law of unintended
consequenses" has caught up with this
"LIBERAL" premise.
