WASHINGTON (AP) -- Gen. David Petraeus, meet your next commander in chief.

The top commander in Iraq found himself in the middle of presidential politics Tuesday -- literally -- as he was questioned by White House candidates politically and physically on either side during a congressional hearing.

The presidential hopefuls made a rare return to Capitol Hill for the high-profile session in which Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker delivered their assessment of the war, now entering its sixth year.

Republican Sen. John McCain elicited answers that he hopes will bolster his call to stay the course. Democratic Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama argued U.S. troops should come home.

Here's the Reuters version, and I like the title better as regards the Democrat candidates:

Presidential candidates posture over Iraq - By Jeff Mason

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. presidential candidates John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama pushed competing positions on the Iraq war at congressional hearings on Tuesday in political theater that may define the race for the White House.

Speaking at televised sessions with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Republican McCain, a senator from Arizona, said combat forces should stay in the country.

Democrats Clinton and Obama, senators from New York and Illinois, respectively, said American troops should withdraw.

*But here's the exchange that I doubt will be replayed on the networks:

"As I acknowledge your honor and patriotism, I hope you would acknowledge the honor and patriotism of those who look at this very complex set of facts and simply have a very different point of view," (Dem. Sen. Even) Bayh told the general.

Petraeus responded: "Senator, we fight for the right of people to have other opinions."

*Stick that in your pipes and smoke it, Democrats!

I want to see a day when the "Combatant Commanders", Centcom, Southcom, etc. get to question Congressional and Senatorial Commissions on their actions in relation to the military in the field.
