Starting Wednesday, Californians under age 18 will have to wear safety helmets when they're on skateboards, inline skates or scooters.
That requirement, the toughest child safety-helmet law in the country, is one of hundreds of laws across the USA that take effect on New Year's Day.
Several new laws involve traffic safety. In New Mexico, for example, repeat drunken drivers will have to use an ignition interlock system for 12 months after their convictions. The driver blows into a device that determines the presence of alcohol and prevents the car from starting if the driver is intoxicated.
In Maine, children will be required to ride in car booster seats until they are 8 years old.
More significantly, these laws take effect Wednesday: (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=676&ncid=716&e=21&u=/usatoday/20021230/ts_usatoday/4738039)
