:flag17: Welcome to :gopusa:
How's your weekend going? We still have cold and :snow: I was sure glad we postponed the party today because there were a lot of accidents everywhere around here. Very bad roads with snow on top can ice under. :ugh: Now it's 17 degrees and supposed to drop into single digits. Might have to let the cat sleep upstairs tonight. :D
So, are we ready for some trivia?

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/4.gifWhat are you doing to help the environment? Switching out lightbulbs? Fuel efficient vehicle? Turned the thermostat down? :realitybites:
I turn the thermostat down to help my finances. I drive less to help my finances. I bought the goofball flourescent lights to help my finances. To help the environment, I eat as much beef as possible to help get the farting cows off the planet. I also don't litter or throw flaming torches from my car.
http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/5.gifDo you recycle? :fileit:
I take papers to a recycling bin either at the church or the school. I don't do plastic yet and I don't buy much in cans.

NO, my lousy eyesight is what makes me curb, but not bad enough to need new tires yet. I try to drive less, but sometimes I just have to go places.
http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/7.gifDo you think there is a recession looming? :whisper:
Actually, if the Democrats win the Congress and the White House, I pretty much see a disaster like the late 70s. Just make sure you have some money to invest when interest rates go through the roof!

It was on my birthday in September. I don't remember the title.

I tried to watch Mission Impossible II. I never made it through it, so I don't recommend it. The last one that I thought was extremely thought provoking was The Butterfly Effect. If you could go back in time and change events, what would the consequences be?

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/4.gifWhat are you doing to help the environment? Switching out lightbulbs? Fuel efficient vehicle? Turned the thermostat down? :realitybites: I've switched out most of my lightbulbs - but that's mainly because I hate changing out the burnt out ones. Hubby is sitting here and he says "She's always cold and can't bring herself to turn down the thermostat!"

Sorta. . . . .
http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/6.gifHave higher gas prices curbed your driving? :tank:
I don't drive that much to begin with so my answer is "No" (it's impossible to cut down much when you only drive 25 miles or so a week). Of course, I'm still driving up to the cottage which is 100 miles away. Hmmmm. . . . so Nope - I'm still driving. CleosDad on the other hand is self-employed and his business depends on driving a lot of miles (600 to 700/week). He does try to keep the truck tuned up and oiled, etc. He also tries to plan ahead to cut down on mileage and unnecessary trips.

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/4.gifWhat are you doing to help the environment? Switching out lightbulbs? Fuel efficient vehicle? Turned the thermostat down? :realitybites: We switched to flourescent bulbs and then discovered the mercury problem and that they are all made in China which may cause our domestic manufacturers of light bulbs to go out of business. I am gradually switching back to regular bulbs.
I love my SRX and wouldn't consider getting rid of it. Besides, with the horses, we'd have to buy a truck if we switched to a smaller vehicle. We don't do unnecessary driving anyway.
With the high heating oil prices, the thermostat is only turned up higher than 68 degrees during the evening hours. The rest of the time we let the sun help heat the house and grab sweaters if we're chilly.
http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/5.gifDo you recycle? :fileit: Yes, it's the law here. We are provided bins and it's picked up weekly on the same day as rubbish. We recycle papers, junk mail, food containers and some plastics.

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/7.gifDo you think there is a recession looming? :whisper: The Democrats and MSM want us to think so and it will be a self fulfilling prophecy if the Dems continue in the majority and win the White House too.

1 Is your Christmas tree up and decorated yet? All my decorations are up.
2.You still have 16 days. Is all your Christmas shopping done? All done. Anything else will be an impulse purchase or tipping for mailmen, tradespeople, etc.
3. Do you have packages to send or do family and friends live close? Both, but they've all been mailed, drop shipped by internet vendors, or delivered.
4. What are you doing to help the environment? Switching out lightbulbs? Fuel efficient vehicle? Turned the thermostat down? I mailed out some fake carbon credit certificates, festively printed in red and green and I haven't eaten whale or spotted owl for the longest time.
5. Do you recycle? Yes, but I'm not a fanatic about it. I often separate paper from glass and metal and put only that garbage in the compost that won't attract varmints and yetis. I also run a constant Krebs cycle, but no longer bicycle or motorcycle. I sometimes get involved in a vicious cycle, however.
6. Have higher gas prices curbed your driving? Not much
7. Do you think there is a recession looming? Let's just call it a short term correction. 4.5% unemployment cannot last forever.
8. What was the last movie you actually went to a theatre to see? "Team America" the puppet movie by Parker and Stone -- a few years ago. I remain amazed that people still go to movie theaters.
9. What was the last video or DVD you have rented or seen? Recommendations? Gosford Park. I just got it again from my library and played it on a five speaker system and heard so much more "cross talk" related to the plot of this English country murder mystery. I seem to rent "Babe" every year. I love that pig.

Good Morning All: Another beautiful day in the Old North State. Its supposed to be in the high 60s or low 70s today and warmer tomorrow. Doesn't seem much like the Christmas season with all the warm weather. The last time we had snow around Christmas was several years back when we had snow the day after Christmas.
Off to do the trivia.
Potpourri
Is your Christmas tree up and decorated yet?
No, this year instead of a Christmas tree we will be planting a Deodar Cedar in our front yard. Its 8 feet tall and is due to be planted tomorrow or Tuesday.
You still have 16 days. Is all your Christmas shopping done?
Yes. Unless we find something else that one of us wants.
Do you have packages to send or do family and friends live close?
Nothing to send - daughter lives about 43 miles away.
What are you doing to help the environment? Switching out lightbulbs? Fuel efficient vehicle? Turned the thermostat down?
Changed several bulbs to CFLs and we drive a VW diesel that gets 34mpg in town and 44mpg on the highway.
Do you recycle?
Yes, we recycle cardboard and aluminum cans.
Have higher gas prices curbed your driving?
Nope, thats the reason for the diesel.
Do you think there is a recession looming?
I foresee a slowdown in the economy due to high fuel prices but do not see a full blown recession.
What was the last movie you actually went to a theatre to see?
Don't remember the name but it was a science-fiction movie with Sean Connery and it was quite a few years ago.
What was the last video or DVD you have rented or seen? Recommendations?
Forest Gump and it was a great movie.

Time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather.

I do what I can and have for about the past 30 years. Just because the libs have co-opted care of the environment doesn't mean I'm not going to do it. I was there before they were. We've been composting for as long as we've lived here - 33 years.
I've always turned off lights in unused rooms, but I need bright light where I'm working so that means 200 W. in the kitchen. I did try out a fluorescent one that was supposed to give off as much light as a filament light, but every piece of meat was kind of a purple/maroon color and the fat was orange. Couldn't stomach that. :barf:

Seeing as how I'm a bachelorette this weekend I watched, I think, 4 DVDs. Arthur2, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Lara Croft, Tomb Raiders, and Diamondbacks. My fav was Mad Max. They were all fantasy and killing, maiming, fighting and blood except for Arthur2, which made me itch, it was so silly. As I said, "fantasy". Diamondbacks was a low budgetter (probably $2.98 [cost of film production, not cost of DVD] ) but was interesting in places. I laughed to see how they portrayed the bad guys (which the movie was named after ????) as a militia group living individually in trailers in swamps with pick-up trucks (you only saw 3 of them - low budget). The guy that's the computer geek and has this room loaded with computers, walks out the door and you're shown it's a really wrecked wooden trailer in the swamp with Spanish moss hanging from the trees. Sheesh! I had to replay it so I could get the full effect! :rotflo: :hilarious:
Almost forgot to mention, the Diamondbacks' leader mentioned "God" several times. :yikes: :melt: Actually this movie was probably the template for all the subsequent portrayals of conservative Republicans.

I had my leg exerciser working all during the movies, so got in a lot - a real lot of exercise.

I’m sure that Osama Obama’s campaign is paying for all of Oprah’s expenses or at least reporting what Oprah spends on herself to the feds. But are they reporting the value of Oprah’s time? What does Oprah charge for her time? $600K per minute? Some of the people that have heard O talk seem to think that OO is going to listen to O and do what she thinks he should do. OO’s spiritual leader – head of a racist church in Chicago – thinks that OO should push for reparations and special government programs for blacks.

WHAT a weekend.....
much merry making over Guy's good news, Son and I dug around in the van he wants (part of Guy's "fleet" of vehicles) and I pried out the defective water pump, yesterday afternoon while Guy was doing sumpin else. It's not defective...it's the wrong kind. Not right for that brand van. Guy would NOT hear of Son and I going to take another car and go buy the right one. "I ze man, I do zis." oooooooooookaaayyyyy yyyyyyy.
I putted around the house yesterday after that pump fiasco, and wandered back to Guy's....he wanted to go to Costco, on a Saturday night, during high shopping season.
I HATE to shop. I HATE crowds....
funny thing....the place was a ghost town. MAYBE ten shoppers. Cashier said to wait til 20 December..."It'll be nuts...."
Today was a gun show, verrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyy inneresting. Picked out one of my Christmas gifts....sweeettt.
Mary Lou, prayers for your Mama........
Later, I've been away from work for toooo many hours, I'm sure there are e-mails from people who either want to buy a station but have no money or want to list a station, but not pay me......tis the season!

Well, I'm making some progress. I have my kitchen, dining room and front stairs decorated. Only 4 or 5 more rooms to go, depending on if I count the front hall as a room or not. I don't decorate any of the upstairs rooms anymore.
This year for the first time since :tails: and :boy: came, I am decorating like I used to before they came. They are past deliberately breaking things and are seeing my best items for the first time since they were babies. In fact, :tails: has been offering suggestions and helping me decorate.

Hi Folks.
Mike has quit smoking and has become a total beeyotch. I don't know if I can STAND this irritability and nastiness. I really hope it goes away soon, since I am in no shape to cope with it right now.
I called Mom in the Hospital. She suffered a near total breakdown of exhaustion, and now her diabetes is out of control. She was dehydrated and had to be on inhalation therapy because her asthma (which she hasn't had in years) went into full swing as well. What a disaster! My sister managed to get Dad to the hospital to visit, and they were all there when I called.

To clear up questions on "Willy Wonka" (from yesterday):
This is the first time a company has done the version written by Tim McDonald and Leslie Bricusse.
And Roald Dahl's widow was not there, but Tim McDonald was.
We (me, son, and son's friend) stayed to get autographs. While waiting for photos to be taken of the cast, etc, there was a "question" time for the cast to ask the playwright about "whatever'...
One person asked him what in his life happened to make him want to write the play.
He said that he is dyslexic, and had a very hard time reading. In the 3rd grade he had a teacher who gave him the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and said, "I bet you can't even read the first sentence in this book." (Mr. McDonald said she was "Wonkish" in her approach.) He told her he could if he really wanted to, but didn't really want to. (A lie to cover his true feelings.)
However, he went home that night and not only read the first sentence, but the entire book in one day.
It changed his life.
So, as an adult, he had written to Felicity Dahl, told her the story and his desire to write the play adaptation. With her blessings, he did. (They have become close.)
We got his autograph, and all the leads, and some of the others of the 85 member cast. Also, a friend of the drama teacher's who did voice overs for Animaniacs (Whacko), Finding Nemo (seagulls), and Transformers.
Kids had a great time.
As an aside to RD's experience....Roald Dahl was originally married to Patricia Neal (had the supporting role in "Hud" with Paul Newman). He also invented a "shunt" that hydrocephalic children had implanted in them to drain the excess fluid from their skulls. The shunt was implanted close to the temporal lobe, snaked down behind the ear and slid into the heart of the child. The heart pumped the fluid away from the brain and relieved the pressure. Dahl's invention became the model on which later and better shunts were developed.
I know this, my youngest brother, Jody, was one of the first to receive this shunt. Problem was, the wonderful stretchy fabrics like polyester, had not been invented and every time a child grew so much, the child had to have a new shunt implanted. Late fifties, early 60's, brain surgery was nothing like it is now.
But Dahl was a brilliant, eccentric man who contributed not only to children via lovely stories, but medically, too.

Thanks for that info RW.. we have a nephew (adopted) that has a shunt, btw.
** I emphasize creativity to my son stating that creativity not only contributes to the arts, but in ALL areas of life. Yours is one example of that being true.
Wow! Just took the latest Zogby Poll... the longest I have taken... A LOT about "green" and "local vs state, federal" questions.... interesting.

One more thing...at the gun show? There was a BIG "Fred Thompson" booth, and a lot of people with tables selling stuff, with Fred literature and not all of it matched the Fred for Prez's booth's literature.
Gee, it just hit me....I wonder why no Democratic literature or booths? Hmmmmmmm

What was the last movie you actually went to a theatre to see?
The last movie I went to see was at a drive-in in Watertown Connecticut that no longer exists. It was "goonies" in 1985. I remember seeing "Mad Max" (Tina Turner) playing on the other screen. I would not go to a movie now if they were offering free gas for life. I'd pull all my own teeth out before sending MY hard earned money to America hating, far-left hollywood!

Good evening,
I have been out and about all day. Beautiful day after the early morning fog burned off.
ML, keep us posted on your Mom. Sorry she is ill, you must be worried.
Tell Mike to get some chantix. It's a but expensive but worth it. My niece said it is great. I went for hypnosis and Joe said I wasn't a bword at all. Hypnosis worked great for me.
I am even too tired to do trivia. Think I will turn in early since I didn't get a nap today.
RW, glad guy's Visa extension came through. I helped my next door neighbors who were from Finland to get on the right track and it wasn't even their fault that Mathew (the hubby) got off track. He had to start from scratch which means they wanted all the fees again. INS is not easy to deal with.
My niece also has a shunt (spina bifida baby). She is all grown up now which at one time would'nt have been possible.
My tree is up but not decorated yet. If I quit this gallivanting maybe I can get it done tomorrow.
Good Night, my eyelids just broke the toothpicks I was propping them open with. I need to find my pillow and jammies.

No kidding. I had to have a lunch during it just to keep my strength up.
Hope your mom is better soon, M-L. Is she still pretty much the sole caregiver for your father? Maybe it's getting the better of her.
Paricia Neal also had a stroke at a fairly young age while she was pregnant with their 5th child. I remember reading in the paper that their son, in his pram, was struck by a car and was badly injured. I also read Dahl was mean and not in the English definition of the word. He liked his own way at all times so I would suspect he was a bully to his family.
Lucky, I'm happy for all of you that the kids have made such wonderful progress.
Congratulations to Guy on his visa extension. Keeping  that all goes well.
Packers won so I'm happy. :woohoo:
Grandson did come over and not only installed my new faucet and sprayer, he installed the slide out shelves in the bottom shelf under the sink and put in the new toilet-paper holder. I :1luvu: that young man. He's a wonder! I fixed him a stuffed pork chop dinner so he left full and content with jobs well done.

Good Evening GOPUSA Forum:
We had showers in the AM, followed by "fog"!
Our 6 inch snowpack has been melted down
by the showers, and now just where snow has
piled high is where it shows! Low tonight 30
and high of 37 Monday in this part of SW Ohio!
Watched some of Rams @ Bengals, Raiders @
Packers, Steelers @ Pats, and now Colts @
Ravens! To put it mildly, all these games have
been "clunckers"!!!
Did housecleaning today as well as some reading! Glad I do my Christmas shopping
on Labor Day weekend, don't have to deal
with the crowds and mess now!!
A glass of 2002 Yellow Tail Merlot! GREAT!
Well, I will watch the NBC game till half and
call it a day!! Good night and GOD BLESS!!!!

Yeah, like on page 5 it said something like "23% completed"... I was thinking, "What the??" LOL
I don't like the way the questions are phrased, or the answer choices... sometimes none of them convey my thoughts.
Oh well.... if that was all I had to worry about it, would be a near-perfect world!
