WASHINGTON (AP) -- Consumers are financing both sides in the war on terror because of the actions of U.S. ally Saudi Arabia, Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Sunday.
The former Arkansas governor made the comments following what he suggested was a muted response by the Bush administration to a Saudi court's sentence of six months in jail and 200 lashes for a woman who was gang raped.
''The United States has been far too involved in sort of looking the other way, not only at the atrocities of human rights and violation of women,'' Huckabee said on CNN's ''Late Edition.''

There is no doubt about it. But that trap was created by Mr. Ford and the Model T and it is a trap that has continued for the worse when we ceased producing our own oil resource for those automobiles. I am not suggesting we open ANWAR, but there are excellent alternate source potential, and I would like to see someone point at those in praise rather than alienate the people who are supplying a huge amount of our energy needs.
A couple of things to know about energy, and the first link will lead to much more.

Corn Shocks in our gas tanks... what an idea. More Carbon Based in our gas tanks... we open the door to our national will being manipulated. I believe lots of folks are looking at the processes and suggesting they better use their oil to manipulate the United States while they still can because tomorrow could be to late.

At least this guy has guts enough to say it. Is saudi arabia really an ally? Do we really need their oil? The answer is no on both accounts.

Huckabee said ''I would make the United States energy independent within 10 years and tell the Saudis they can keep their oil just like they can keep their sand, that we won't need either one of them.''
I heard Huckabee passionately propose that we could become independent of foreign oil in 10 years IF WE PUT OUR MINDS TO IT. (He likened it to Kennedy asking for man on the moon in 10, and got it in 8.)
I agree with him, we ARE financing the terrorism. I also agree that we could become independent.... but it needs to be SOLD to the American people... exactly like he is saying. All boloney aside. *One of the very few things I agree with Huckabee on.*
Time for ANWR, shale extraction, and nuclear plants. Past time, actually.
(Interesting article Ohwellii, although I do worry about the lean toward ethanol as the answer to our fuel problems... using the "waste" for fuel sounds like a good idea.)

I think it's way past time for us to jump into our think tanks and see if we can come up with an abundant alternative synthetic fuel, as powerful if not more powerful than gasoline, so we can tell the Arabs to sit on it.
Surely there must be a way to find this source of energy if we research it.

First Americans will have to quit procrastinating and change their life style, then they will have to take their country back from self serving special interest groups, politicians and big money.

The problem with alternative fuels is that they're not affordable. Even for the rich. Even IF the rich started leading by example (see: Al Gore.. oh wait.. ha ha ha) the rest of us couldn't even afford to follow suit.
You've got cars that run on french fry oil. Great, but how many McDonald's restaurants are going to have to open to keep the big riggs on the road? I'm all for it. However, it has to be competitive to what we have now. I'm not willing to pay 5 bucks for a gallon of fuel.
First Americans will have to quit procrastinating and change their life style, then they will have to take their country back from self serving special interest groups, politicians and big money.
I don't apologize for my lifestyle. I do what it takes to take care of my family. I'd be willing to change if there was a benefit other than the Al Gore Theory.
I'm too busy working to just "change my lifestyle". Show me something that works better, and I'll happily invest to jump in.
"Environmentally friendly" is not the middle class's way quite yet. The cars that consume less gas cost more than what you'd save. I drive for a living, and owning a "hybrid" would actually cost me $900.00 more a year. Is throwing $900.00 a year worth saving the environment?
The way I see it, "Environmentally Friendly" is still for the rich people and the smug attention seekers, of which I'm neither.
Nothing is wrong with special interest groups. The NRA is one, and I'm a member. I pay for them to represent me to our politicians.
Not a direct attack on you, Pete. I like your posts. :) But food for thought.

Mr. Huckabee is correct we are enslaved to Saudi Oil!! BUT, why are we not drilling in ANWR,
the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of California, and anywhere else "WE" have oil??? Republicans
must "stand up" to the COMMUNIST environmental lobby in America and tell "common" Americans we need our "OWN" oil!
