A U.S. senator says immigration authorities should be on hand to arrest illegal aliens who show up to get the controversial Matricula Consular cards issued by the Mexican government.

Sen. David Vitter, Louisiana Republican, asked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to place agents this weekend outside a municipal building in Lafayette, La., where Mexican consular officials had planned to issue the cards, which can be obtained by any Mexican living outside Mexico. Critics say the cards are a magnet for illegal aliens because they convey the trappings of legal status.

(Mr. Vitter says ICE refused his request, but the Lafayette city government stepped in and revoked the consulate's license to use the municipal building.-----"All countries party to the Vienna Conventions have the right and obligation to care for their citizens, regardless of their migratory status on the host country," said Ricardo Alday, a spokesman for the Mexican Embassy. "That's part of what Mexican consulates do in the United States, and the same way U.S. consulates abroad take care of Americans.")

totally correct--CONSULATES, not running all over to big cities to issue them there!!!! if they are wanted they are supposed to go to the consulate rather than the consulate coming to them.

this is just anothe way of thumbing their noses at our immigration laws. I am surprised however that someone had the gumption here to revoke the permit for this happening, but with a lot of people having high feelings on the immigration I am not surprised that complaints were made.

the first one didn't get any kind of publicity but someone should have known about it.

How different is this activity from cities declaring themselves to be sanctuary cities; much like Des Moines, IA is doing?

The consular card sounds like a case of "if Mohammad can't come to the mountain, the mountain must come to Mohammad". This activity should not be tolerated by our government any more than sanctuary cities. The government needs to pull all funding, regardless of program, to any city that declares it is a sanctuary to illegals.

I say kudos for Lafayette,La.!

People everywhere are so "fed up" with this.

I never cease to be amazed at the arrogance of the Mexican govt. and their people, and EVEN some of our Latino citizen politicians, who have the "gall" to demand rights and entitlements for illegal aliens!....Outrageou s!
