January 14, 2003
BY ANDREW HERRMANN STAFF REPORTER
Illinois' prison boss visited Death Row on Monday to prepare inmates to move out, as some of the formerly condemned were said to be "scared" to enter the general prison population.
Corrections Director Donald N. Snyder Jr. visited prisoners in Downstate Pontiac and Menard, where he said emotions among Death Row inmates are mixed after Gov. George Ryan's commutation.
He said officials plan to move all of the male Death Row inmates into the general population at maximum security facilities at Menard and at Stateville near Joliet within 30 days. Pontiac doesn't have a general population. Instead, the facility houses men segregated for disciplinary reasons.
