Mount Shasta Glaciers Defy Global Warming, Grow

(CBS13) MOUNT SHASTA The debate over global warming has taken a pretty odd twist in Northern California. Up on Mount Shasta, the glaciers are not behaving like you'd expect.

Big mountains often produce their own weather patterns. Mount Shasta, at 14,162 feet seems to have a mind of its own these days. Shasta has seven glaciers. The biggest is the one on the middle, Whitney Glacier. What has surprised scientists about the glacier is that if the theories about global warming are true, the glacier ought to be shrinking, but it's not.

Those models predict Shasta will continue to receive more than normal snowfall, but if the temperature continues to rise, the glaciers will begin to recede.

Was the bold part of the sentence just thrown in there as a sop to the Global Whiners? Or...

Shasta glaciers have been growing for 100 years, and apparently made it through the highest temperatures ever during the 1930's. so why would they all of a sudden recede just because Al Gore wants them to??

Quick! Human interference and global co-operation is a must! We must reverse this dangerous trend.

Start your polluting lawn mowers and motorcycles and SUV's and leave them running until we see the trend reverse! Gas prices be damned! We MUST change our climate immediately!

Al Gorming and his ilk will spin this as an example that heating causes a temporary increase in glacier growth but will be followed by a receding.

I'm all for Gorming to take one of the hiking tours up Mt. Shasta to see for himself. Only as long as he does it immediately. Can't have him miss the positive aspect because he was trying to get into shape.

afraid albore will spin this as melting and re-freezing overnight at a lower elevation instead of growing where it should---at the top part of it!!

It can only be the result of (take your pick):

- lies put out by the Bush administration and other "deniers"

- "green" protests

- hybrid automobiles

- carbon offsets

- increased ethanol usage

- Algore's and Barak's replacement of traditional light bulbs with (mercury infused) eco-friendly light bulbs in their homes

- "save the glaciers" folk songs

- natural periodic changes in solar radiation, earth wind and marine currents, and other random factors.
