NEW YORK -- One person is dead and more than a dozen others are injured after a steam pipe exploded on the East Side of Manhattan during the evening rush hour. Police ruled out terrorism, and as of 9:08, it has been declared under control.
The explosion, which drew a five-alarm response from fire officials, occurred at 41st Street and Lexington Avenue, blocks away from Grand Central Station and the Chrysler building.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg described the pipe break as a "failure of our infrastructure," saying that a 24-inch steam pipe burst. The pipe, which was first laid in 1924, exploded after cold water seeped into it.
