NEW YORK (Talon News) -- U.S. Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Affairs John R. Bolton testified before the House Committee on International Relations to outline the Bush Administration's new strategy to combat the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

"Our goal is to work with other concerned states to develop new means to disrupt the proliferation trade at sea, in the air, and on land," Bolton told the Committee, which is chaired by Illinois Republican Henry Hyde.

Bolton recalled Bush's announcement of the Proliferation Security Initiative on May 31 in Krakow Poland. Near the start of his European and Middle Eastern tour late last week, Bush spoke of the need for the means and the authority to seize weapons of mass destruction and their components in transit.

"The United States and a number of our close allies, including Poland, have begun working on new agreements to search planes and ships carrying suspect cargo and to seize illegal weapons or missile technologies," Bush said in his address.
