LOS ANGELES (AP) - A group hoping to lessen U.S. reliance on foreign oil on Wednesday debuted two television ads that link gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles to terrorist funding.
The ads mimic spots that link drug money to terrorism.

One commercial features a child's voiceover and shows a man filling his gas tank and footage of terrorist training. The closing statement: "Oil money supports some terrible things. What kind of mileage does your SUV get?"

The other ad shows people talking about their SUVs. One says, "My kids think it's cool." Another says, "I helped blow up a nightclub."

The 30-second ads were created for The Detroit Project, a nonprofit launched by syndicated columnist Arianna Huffington. They will begin airing Sunday in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington and Detroit.

Full Story (http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGA5CW11QAD.html)

These were shown several times on Fox yesterday and they are typical liberal hyperbole. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mr_yuk.gif

The SUV has become the hallmark of Republican politics. Now we have a very simple icon to hold high.

I suggest that all people who believe in America, individual rights, Motherhood, G_d and Apple Pie purchase an SUV as soon as possible. I have 3 and am thinking of getting another one. I just can't think of how to drive them all at the same time but will work on this.

We don't really have an SUV but I wonder if one gas guzzling 1 ton pickup truck and a motorhome will suffice. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin5.gif

Something stinks. Ê

This is more of the peculiar logic that was used in the failed attempt to link illicit drug money with terrorism, and it too, is wrong. Ê

If anything, druggies are bigger capitalists than car companies. ÊExcept for the odd idealist, they're not funding bearded bombers any more than Daimler-Chrysler or Exxon is.

I'm starting to wonder if we're not the victims of a scam that is trying to place the U.S. in a perpetual "state of war" Êin order to cover something more sneaky, like unreasonable assaults on the Constitution.

What hidden agenda could require fear, insecurity and the suspension of your liberties in order to become reality? Ê

Why are we constantly being scared into believing that the war on terrorism is going to be a permanent condition? ÊWhy is there an increasing, blatant attempt at circumventing checks, balances, and the liberties guaranteed us by our Constitution? Ê

Something is up.

Tribunals? ÊClosed trials? ÊHere? Ê

Yes, and these things are in the news, daily.

This SUV business is just a tip of a very weird iceberg. ÊOne designed to put terrorists under every rock. Ê

Why? Ê

Something stinks. ÊIt's just crawling around in the back of my mind, but I don't think I like Ashcroft's America very well. Ê

Smells too much of jackboots and brown shirts. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

Terri

So you think Ashcroft has somehow conceived these commercials to keep us thinking about terrorism, HMW?

Wrong!

Did you ever hear of Arianna Huffington? Very rich, very leftwing, old biddy with an agenda for this country, Socialism. *And she is paying for the SUV terrorism commericals, not Ashcroft.

She is aiding and abetting the leftwing professors from academia, the socialists (read Democrats) in Congress, the ACLU and those who support them in their effort to terrorize the nation through the courts.

Ashcroft's America??? * http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif

It's the leftwing in this country who wants to decide what we are allowed to drive, what we should eat, which air we can breathe, what words we can use, what thoughts we can think, every single detail of our lives from top to bottom.

And people are worrying about Ashcroft. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tinfoil.gif

But, you are right. Something does stink and until people realize what it is it will just continue to decay further. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mr_yuk.gif

We should be worrying about jackboots and they are being worn by the race mongers, the extreme environmentalists, the academics rewriting our history books, the word police, the UCLA and their Democrat operatives.

Personally, I don't have an SUV. *But, I'm a single college guy who needs all the money I can get. *The only real reason I don't have one is because I like my 23+ mpg. *That doesn't mean I think the SUV is wrong. *Yes, it guzzles gas, and the only benifit I can really see of people having less and driving them less, is that gas prices might go down (doubtful, knowing the tax-happy governments of States and Federal levels, and OPEC).

Of course, I don't think that owning an SUV = supporting terrorism any more than my Hyundai Elantra do. *They both run on the same gas. *One takes more than the other, true. *But at the rate I drive, I probably make up for it anyway.

I can sympathize with the drug commercial much more than the SUV one. *Drugs are an underground business, and any underground business is much, much more likely to support terrorism, either here or abroad. *Simply filling your tank up doesn't mean you support terrorism. *You're doing something legal, and necessary in this day and age. *Drugs are illegal an unnecessary. *Big difference.

It seems our good friend (and I use that term loosely) Ariana Huffington has forgotten about something. *ANWR. *Not only that, but there are other places that could stand to have the oil extracted from them while we work on an alternative souce for energy that is as reliable as oil, and comparable in price.

As far as the tribunals and such, the only people subject to them are Al Qeade members, really. *If the system is good enough for our own soldiers, it's good enough for those who would do our soldiers harm. *And as far as the war on terrorism itself goes, it will not last forever.

It may last until the Second Coming, but it won't last forever.

Just my http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twocents.gif

Shame on you, Terri. ÊThat's beneath you.

Huffington is neither particularly rich or old, or a biddy, and, as far as having an agenda, leftwing or otherwise, who doesn't? Ê

Oh! ÊAnd she is not &quot;paying&quot; for these commercials. ÊShe was part of the Detroit Project, which supports hybrid cars and, ill-advisedly made these stupid commercials in the style of the Bush Drug 'n Terrorism laughingstock, which WAS paid for &quot;by Ashcroft&quot;.

...and her latest on the subject is below. ÊIt's fairly MOR, reasonably presented, and a damn good argument. ÊRead please, before any more blind ad hominem attacks. ROAD OUTRAGE (http://www.ariannaonline.co m/columns/files/010603.html)

And while I'm at it, shame on the rest of you who proudly wave your wastage of resources as a &quot;right&quot; you are defending from imagined liberal bogeymen. ÊJust when did needless waste of anything become a source of pride for you? ÊAnd whoever suggested that you would be deprived of your right to choose your own transportation?

Who are you, strange people?

I and the majority of the planet don't care what you drive, nor do we care that the majority of you use massive vehicles to compensate for some other deficiency in your life, psyche or shorts. Ê

This is America. ÊIt happens all the time.

Frankly, if you don't need a massive SUV and own one anyway, you're the same as that thoughtless, annoying, selfish kid with the shiny red Firebird that went screeching up and down the street in the 70's. Ê

He did it with a hi-cube engine, you do it in a barely disguised schoolbus that Detroit is delighted to overcharge you for.

(You do know that car companies consider SUV's their most profitable per-sale items, don't you... Sucker?)

You see, if you're not delivering serum to the Yukon or hunting the backwoods to support your tribe or something else worthy that requires 4WD and all that goes with it, you're just a bunch of old-style Moms in latter-day station wagons childishly pretending you're G.I. Joe or Sheena of the Jungle, ready to righteously crush anything that gets in your way with your mighty machine. Ê

I know. ÊAdmitting that you're just exactly the same as your boring old mother or father was, just toodling your life away in the old Olds Vista-Cruiser Station Wagon or Ford Country Squire would be just too declassŽ, wouldn't it? Ê

That COULDN'T be you! ÊYou're too... special.

Well, guess what? ÊThat IS you. ÊThe only thing that's changed is the car. Ê

Hey! ÊWhy not sell the SUV and put a down payment on a clue? ÊYou'll probably have enough to buy a boob job or penis implant and a semblance of a life, too!

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Shame on you, Terri. ÊThat's beneath you.
<span id='postcolor'>

Oh yeah, but someone has to do it. The truth hurts but it's my turn to tell it.

Surely you don't argue that Arianna is not leftwing, do you? *Surely, you aren't trying to tell me that her brand of social interference is anything other than Socialism, are you?

And here's the definition of &quot;biddy&quot; from Dictionary.com (A woman, especially a garrulous old one.) *Actually, I'm not sure of her age. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

She isn't rich? *Will she get a tax break under the President's plan? I thought so. That means she's rich according to the liberals, right? Btw, I heard yesterday that her house is over 8,000 square feet. I wonder how many people live there with her and would I be using too many resources if my house was over 8,000 sq. ft. or does that just apply to my vehicles?

Ms. Huffington has not had a substantial role in funding the Detroit Project and the commercials it supports? I'm sure you saw her plea for funding to get them on the air if you saw the Road Outrage article.

Here's what I draw from your correlation to the drug ads. Ashcroft is bad for running ads against drugs even though we know that terrorists do make money from drugs and at least some of us actually think drugs are bad.

But using the same approach in ads against SUVs is good because buying legal gasoline is bad because Socialists think SUVs are bad.

One other little thing. Do you think Ms. Huffington drives a Geo Metro or does she get a pass on her car just like she does on her house?

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Who are you people?
<span id='postcolor'>

I wouldn't presume to speak for anyone else but I can tell you who I am.

I'm a capitalist American who worked for a living all my life. I actually earned the money that paid for my big Dodge Ram and my motorhome too. That money is just as well spent on those vehicles as it is on an 8,000 sq. ft. home and it is none of Arianna Huffington's business what I drive.

That said, I have no problem with development of other sources of energy but I think it's highly unlikely that anything significant will come from social engineers or the ivory halls. When it is done it will be done by good ol American capitalists who have invented everything else.

HMW, don't waste your declarations of shame on me. My only shame is for not speaking out against Socialists and the damage they do many years ago.

Oh, one other thing. It's just fine with me if you ride your bike or drive your Yugo. It's none of my business just as my truck and motorhome are none of Arianna's business. I also wish her well on her 8,000 sq. ft. home and the energy it uses. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

So cars are associated with shorts? *Is that why Socialists drive Yugos? *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin5.gif

All in good fun, HMW. *I don't mind the smell of toasting liberal. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin2.gif

Terri's right on.

SUVs, by the way, get mileage ratings from 8 MPG up to and including 30+ MPG so saying SUV are gas guzzlers is a mistaken impression. Not to worry, this whole SUV is a &quot;mistaken impression&quot;. It is MEANT to be propaganda, not truth.

The most popular vehicle in America is a truck, more trucks are sold than any other type of vehicle. Most trucks sold in America are 4x4. I believe I read somewhere that most trucks are owned by women. I can believe it as my wife owns our only truck in the family. A hot Chevy sport truck, black in color with a hot V-8 that she loves to blast off the stoplight beating the cars next to us. She is a tire smoker, and is in her 60s too. Course she is a California girl from the 50s where smoking tires and loud pipes were a sign of intelligent life, not to mention joi de vivre!

SUVs are hated by the greenies for only one reason, they go OFFROAD!!!!! AAARRRGGHHHH, if anything is hated in America it is DRIVING OFF ROAD!

The fact that 4x4 vehicles are inherently more safe than most other cars is noticed by the purchasers who understand that not only is 4x4 drive better in rain but snow and dry pavement too. In addition 4x4s are generally more powerful and have more room. As far as accidents go, all you have to do is look at the stats to find out that more people die in little cars than big cars. End of story.

Federal mandates to make small &quot;peoples cars&quot; is reminiscent of socialist planning but the people aren't buying into this nightmare. Instead we are buying cars that are the size we wish to have, but our wishes are not the wishes of the fascist left, who want to plan our lives for us. This makes us happy. So we buy more SUVs. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

But before then, I'm going to eat generous portions of steak, wash it down with Jack Daniels, light up a non-filtered Pall Mall, and burn rubber across the frozen tundra.

Now here is an interesting question; what constitutes &quot;need&quot; for an SUV as hmw put it, and who gets to decide what is a need? I love my Expedition, it gets about 15-17 mpg, and I drive over 35,000 miles per year. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif Wow. I must be personally responsible for the rise in gas costs in my area, for shame! I work in orange groves, and do have a need for an SUV, as well as for carrying equipment, (plus occassionally a family of 5) but you know what? I have grown to love my Expedition so much in the past 2 years that if I were doing nothing but highway, I would never go back to another type of vehicle until they stopped making them. Guess what else? That is not going to happen anytime soon, no matter how many anti-SUV ads get aired, because after pickups and vans, SUVs are still the most popular make of vehicle in America. Neither hybrids, or Japanese economy cars, or VWs are ever going to replace large vehicles in our country. If they decide to create a more fuel-efficient roomy large vehicle like an SUV, more power to them. I am not against fuel-efficiency. But people will buy them regardless, because freedom of choice is at the very basis of capitalism in the U.S., and the consumer still reigns supreme here. If there is a market for it, it will be made. End of story. And for the record, I love eating animal flesh, even though I don't hunt. Just like what happened with tobaco this is just going to end up being an attempt by the government to grab more money. I maybe wrong here but isn't this how things started with tobaco? This thread was about the commercials that parody (successfully, I think), the Bush drug/terrorism spots, while prodding Detroit to get on the stick and develop hybrids, fuel cells, or whatever it takes to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Fuel takes many forms, and our focus on oil alone is unsafe and unhealthy.

Turn all farm surplus into alcohol and methane and begin fueling power plants with it.
