Global warming, Mark Twain might say, is like the weather: Everybody talks about it but nobody ever does anything about it.
About a dozen states and several hundred cities in the United States have pledged to cut their greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to follow the example of Europe and Japan. Many Americans in opinion polls say they are worried about a climate catastrophe, and Congress under Democratic control is vowing for the first time in years to do something to prevent it.
But taking the drastic actions required to cut emissions to levels that many scientists say would be benign for the environment is another thing entirely.

Practically none of the countries who signed the Kyoto Protocol are able to meet their lower emission standards, either. Most report higher levels.
In contrast, Britain has seven vehicles for every 10 drivers, and China has nine cars for every thousand drivers.
This is reported practically as a point of pride. Check out China in 10 years. There will be a thousand cars for every thousand drivers. They're movin' on up.
Saw a documentary the other night and it told how the evironmentalists are trying to make sure Africans don't get electricity so they're not hard on the environment.
Women are dying of lung cancer from constantly cooking over open fires. To try to keep people in a primitive condition is nothing short of murdering them. And BTW, I thought the envirowackos were waaaaay against burning because it is such a high contributor to pollution.
They'd rather have people die than have a tree or an animal die.
Hysterical fools!

The problem is not "global warming", it is global WHINING. Fortunately, some of the proponents of the former DO practise at least some of what they preach (eg actor/comedian/producer Larry David (the other driving force behind Seinfeld) and his wife Laurie, who, to their credit, drive Toyota Priuses --- themselves marvels of technology --- and now word is Teresa Heinz Kerry is forced to grapple with how much air travel she and her husband engage in.
Even though "global warming" is a lie, it is important that we consider developing renewable energy sources if only for the sake of energy independence. More and more folks are integrating energy-efficient resources into their own lives, from compact fluorescent bulbs to solar panels to windmills.
Wonder if AlGorebachev might like to see about creating his own hydroelectric dam on any stream that may flow through his own property. He might even be able to develop his own energy, sell the excess to the Tennessee Valley Authority --- and even develop new habitat for amphibians fish and birds to boot with his own private lake!
Of course there are SOME hazards that come from nickel hydride batteries like those used in Larry David's Toyota Prius, from the mining to the manufacture. Maybe instead of shipping it from Canada to Europe to China to Japan back to Canada before becoming batteries that nickel could be smelted and processed near the mine where it is drawn from --- the area in northern Ontario where that mine is located is itself so barren that Nasa use that area to test moon buggies!
