ATF Needs A Hard Stand On Soft Liquor

As the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) winds up its study of the newest craze in alcohol consumption - Flavored Malt Beverages, or "aclopop" - the rest of the world is taking a hard look at the impact these drinks have on teenage drinkers, particularly girls.

These products are a popular new category of hybrid alcoholic beverages with names such as Bacardi Silver, Jack Daniels Hard Cola, Smirnoff Ice and Mike's Hard Lemonade. Although alcopop meets technical beer standards, it contains hard liquor, and its marketing and brand names muddy the distinction between the two.

After infusing the beverage with federally mandated minimum quantities of malt and hops for beer designation, the color and beer taste are removed and flavorings added that often contain high levels of distilled alcohol.

Because BATF has so far put alcopop in the beer category, it has slipped by the national networks' standard of not running hard liquor advertising. Ads for alcopop are shown at sporting events and during TV shows such as Friends , which attract a young audience. Fortunately, BATF has been reviewing the marketing and promotion of alcopop in an effort to determine whether it should play under hard liquor rules.

What a crock.

"Alcopop"? Ooooooooh! Must be scary if it's got a buzzword.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">a popular new category of hybrid alcoholic beverages[/QUOTE]<span id='postcolor'>??? hybrid? A bubbly, sweet mixer with a shot of alcohol in it. Gin n' Tonix, 7 n' 7, bourbon n' coke... there are others.

Containing no more level of alcohol than beer, the origin of the alcohol is completely irrelevant. That this segment might be forced to &quot;play under hard liquor rules&quot;, is ridiculous. Who's blowing smoke here?

Besides. Unless something has radically changed in this country while I wasn't watching, the BATF does NOT control advertising. (Heck, they can't even manage a good siege much less an ad campaign). The beverage boys are voluntarily holding off on ads for the hard stuff, but beer and it's ilk are accepted and acceptable at this point.

The beverage industry, in perfect capitalist form, has come up with a new beverage that appeals to younger audiences in a way that beer doesn't. Surprise! The younger people are drinking it !

So?

That this is somehow troubling and a cause for chagrin is pure, manufactured, horsedribble that's popped up since the days of Boone's Farm and Annie Green Springs, Ripple, Spanada, Maui Schnapps and other nasty, sweet kiddie cocktails.

Blame the drunk, not the drink.

&quot;Ya Ya its the ATF's fault that my 16 year old is a drunk, nothing to no with I am a horrible parent.&quot;
