Quote[/b] ]ISSUE: Well, whadda ya know -- it seems some Congressmen
want to "giveth" tax cuts, only to "taketh them away" by
raising our taxes elsewhere. Specifically, there is a move
in the House of Representatives to raise taxes on gas, to
offset tax cuts elsewhere.

A staunch defender of American taxpayers, Rep. Marilyn
Musgrave (R-CO), has announced that she is circulating a
letter in Congress to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert
opposing "any and all efforts to raise or index the gasoline
tax."

"Current proposals to raise the gas tax are counterproductive
at a time when Republicans are working to pass tax relief in
President Bush's Economic Growth Package," said Musgrave.
"The American people need their tax burden lifted, not
shifted."

The current federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon. State
taxes on gasoline average just over 22 cents, according to
the Federal Highway Administration. The combined state and
federal gas taxes amount to more than $50 billion annually
in taxes. This represents an annual tax burden of $660 for
the average family, and every penny increase in the gas tax
increases that family's annual tax bill by $25. If a 5.4 cent
increase in the gas tax is enacted, each family could see its
yearly tax burden increase by $135. The total gas tax
incurred by each family annually would be almost $800.

To date, Musgrave's letter has gained the support of nearly
30 House Republicans. As NewsMax.com has reported, the Bush
administration opposes raising the gas tax, as does the number
two House official -- Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX).

The Musgrave letter aims to influence the number one leader,
Speaker Hastert, who has a near life-and-death influence on
legislation. He might be even more inclined to listen if
thousands of grassroots conservatives drop him a line as well.

ACTION ITEM: We've set up an editable pre-written letter,
just like the one that two dozen Congressmen have signed
onto, that you can send directly to your Representative,
asking him to oppose any gas tax hike. When you hit "Send,"
a copy will also be sent directly to Speaker Hastert.

As Wes Vernon at Newsmax.com put it, "This issue is not going
away. Musgrave and her colleagues in effect are saying the
GOP has a choice: Uphold its status as the tax-cutting party
OR allow itself to be perceived as the party that will cut
taxes and then find another way to pick the taxpayers'
pockets."
