CNN 'backpedals' on gun story

Admits it misled viewers in comparing different types of weapons

Saying CNN may have deliberately misled viewers about the legality of various weapons, a leader in the gun-rights movement is lashing out at the network for incorrectly reporting that fully automatic weapons are banned under a 1994 law set to expire next year.

"Either it was a deliberate attempt to fake the story, or the reporter had a complete ignorance of the story he's covering," Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, told the Washington Times.

In two broadcasts last Thursday, CNN incorrectly reported that fully automatic weapons are currently banned under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. The CNN broadcasts included firing demonstrations by the Broward County, Fla., Sheriff's Department that implied currently banned weapons are much more powerful than similar but legal ones, when in fact that is not the case.

http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rofl.gif Ya think?

Since when did Fox allow special interest groups to control stories so obviously biased as this?

CNN has 24 writers, over 5 "fact checkers", not to mention experts, pundits et al that they STAFF on a FULL-TIME basis.

And it took only ME to figure out that the entire story was bullcrap out of the gate.

If you can't figure out that a semi-automatic doesn't fire multiple rounds at one pull of the trigger, you shouldn't be reporting on the subject in the first place.

You get a C+ for effort, tho! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif

I won't watch connie chung, dan rather or a couple of others. I have yet to understand how these people can deliver news objectively yet be so biased. I also have not figured out how a revolver becomes a colt .45, or how an ar15 semi auto becomes an ak47, but that happens all of the time on the news stories about weapons being used. cnn is no different from the rest of the stations except for fox, and that is why a lot of people classify anything as an assault weapon. Where do they dig up these people that cannot simply find the right stuff to go with the news story being presented?? http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag17.gif *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag17.gif *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag17.gif *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Guys, they hired him away from the New York Times thinking it was "quite the coup". *That would explain why the story is so "amazing", eh?

By the way, thundercat505, welcome to the forum. (I have a special affection for the Thundercats so I like your forum name). --- Ruth ---

CNN couldn't beat Lance Armstrong in a bicycle race, but if they changed the rules to Back Peddling, Lance wouldn't stand a chance.

http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I have an idea that most of these people really couldn't find their own backside with a roadmap, flashlight or both hands, yet they are supposed to give the news as un-biased as possible. they even have a message that some views are not necessarily the view of the company. But when you take a look at it, who writes up the que cards?? if it isn't he views of the company why do they write the stuff the way they do?? News papers are the same way at times. the local paper is only once a week, but at least they are objective in what they write, but a lot of the larger papers are as bad or worse for the way they report the same news that you see on tv. none of them can come close to O'reilly though and I love to see him bust someones bubble when they come up with some of the off the wall far left stuff. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag19.gif http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag19.gif

Yeah, the reporter seemed to be lacking even the most fundemental knowledge of the subject.
It pretty obvious that "if you fire the same caliber and type bullets from the two guns, you get the same impact", but for some reason they missed that in the original piece too.
Duh...

I don't know how many of you have heard this before, but I almost fell off the chair when my sister hit me with it. CNN to me will now and forever be known as CLINTON NEWS NETWORK. Quote[/b] ]The Times reports Jenne [the officer firing the test weapons] is a former Democratic state legislator who supported an unsuccessful bill in the Florida Legislature in 2000 that sought to ban "assault rifles" using a broad definition that would have prohibited several types of rifles and many handguns.

Now that's illuminating. *They had an AGENDA... *Shocking...

Like the Des Moines Register, when the state starts talking funding problems, budget cuts and program reductions, they start running special stories about all the great and mighty gummint programs. In a cavalcade of "human interest" they share about how the DHS saved this kid from his abusive parents and this single mom escaped her horrible husband because of some other program and the helpful attentive DMV worker saved a poor puppy from a nearby well... *

Agenda, agenda, agenda.

No honest story about ther REAL differences between a semi-automatic weapon and a "regular" one, they'd rather DIRECT you on how to think about the topic.
