CONCORD, N.H. --A man who holed up in his house with armed supporters while being tried on tax evasion charges was convicted Thursday, along with his wife, of failing to pay federal income taxes for a decade.

Ed Brown has said he will defend himself against capture if necessary.

U.S. Marshal Stephen Monier said Thursday that members of his staff continued talking by telephone with Brown and had no plans to confront him. Brown said he expected federal agents to swarm his property soon.

Sounds like Mr. Brown plans to go out in a blaze of glory.

Here's an idea. Anyone convicted of tax evasion for not paying taxes for, say, 10 years or more, should be cut out of ALL federal benefits, including Social Security benefits.

I certainly don't tolerate a federal agency that has absolutely zero jurisdiction in my state, never mind in my county, in my town."

Sounds like Mr. Brown wants to be "dead right!"

I know several individuals who have not paid their Federal Income taxes for years, or at least claim they don't pay. I don't think the IRS will go after the little guy, but $600K is worth going after.

By the "letter of the law", these conspiracy nuts have a point. But, in reality, the IRS expects you to pay income taxes based on your income.

Like them, I wish the Federal government was not so big, and did not have such a foothold into our personal lives, but they [the Feds] do need tax money to run the government. A Federal sales tax would stop this bickering, but could possibly raise an even bigger issue.

With the income tax, you at least can plan on the amount of taxes you pay each year.

Anyone convicted of tax evasion for not paying taxes for, say, 10 years or more, should be cut out of any federal benefits, including Social Security benefits.

They can keep all of my Social Security money if they will just allow me to quit paying more SS taxes now...and I'm 62 years old. If I retire at 70, I will pay approximately $120,000 in SS tax between now an then. There is no way I will ever recover that money.

This has been tried many times before and the defendant always loses. None ever seem to put the tax money into an escrow account pending the outcome of their tax fight/court hearings. Unless someone can come up with a completely new argument, the courts have decided taxes must be paid. It's silly to keep fighting a losing battle when the outcome is certain.
