Coping with war

Military parents find ways at home to honor soldiers

By Rachel Rausch

NEW LONDON — Annette and Del Meyer think about their 23-year-old son, Luke Herbst, every day.

They aren't always sure where he is or what he's doing, but they pray for him and send him care packages (the most recent one containing a skateboard and guitar for Christmas).

Sgt. Herbst is in Kuwait, serving in the 121st National Guard unit on his second tour for the war on Iraq. He first served in the 1st Calvary division of the U.S. Army from March 2004 to March 2005 as a sniper and gunner on a Humvee.

The New London family is featured in the controversial book "American Mourning" by Catherine Moy and Melanie Morgan, which looks at the war through the eyes of two families who have lost their sons. It was released Oct. 16, 2006.

This great story needs to be in every single newspaper across the country.

God bless them. Their is so many ways for us to help our military out. The most important thing is to pray for their safety.
