CEI's Sam Kazman Discusses SUV Safety on MSNBC's Donahue Show
by Sam Kazman
January 15, 2003
SHOW: MSNBC's Donahue Show
HEADLINE: An alarming warning from the auto safety czar has Phil asking, should you think twice before getting behind the wheel of your SUV?
BYLINE: Phil Donahue
DONAHUE: Welcome back to DONAHUE. We're live from New York City.
Sport utility vehicles seem to dominate the highways all over America, but just how safe are they? Almost four million of them were sold last year. And in the year 2000, almost 2,000 people died in SUV rollover accidents. And a person in an SUV is three times as likely to die as a result of rollover than someone in a passenger car. Why should that be?
Yesterday the head of the National Highway Safety -- Traffic Safety Administration, Jeffrey Runge, a government official, said SUVs aren't safe enough and people should think twice about buying one. I don't remember a stronger punch in the mouth from somebody working for the government against the entire auto industry than that one. This is truly a remarkable statement for him to be making.
Joan Claybrook is president of the consumer group Public Citizen and the former head of the National Highway Safety -- Traffic Safety Administration. She joins us from Washington. We also have Sam Kazman, general counsel for the Competitive Enterprise Institute, representing the auto industry.
This is how fuel economy...kills people... (http://www.cei.org/gencon/023,03330.cfm)
