Reforming our Income Tax System:
The Merits of the Flat Tax vs. National Sales Tax
The income tax system, as it stands today, has been the source of numerous debates over the last several years. Congress has repeatedly made attempts to reform the income tax system using measures rangingfrom simple tax cuts to a complete overhaul of the income tax system.
Countless hours of debate on this topic have led to one conclusion: the income tax system is in desperate need of reform. The system is inherently unfair, complex, and burdensome. It discourages investment, savings, and capital formation by taxing excessively. The best means of reform, however, has yet to be decided. Reforms will have to be carefully crafted to ensure that revenues are not negatively affected.
In Congress, the tide seems to be moving towards one of two possiblemethods of reform: (1) a flat tax or (2) a consumption based nationalsales tax.
