"There are certain social principles in human nature, from which we may draw the most solid conclusions with respect to the conduct of individuals and of communities. We love our families more than our neighbors; we love our neighbors more than our countrymen in general. The human affections, like solar heat, lose their intensity as they depart from the centre... On these principles, the attachment of the individual will be first and for ever secured by the State governments. They will be a mutual protection and support." -- Alexander Hamilton</span>

Good morning everyone. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif

I place blueberry turnovers in the lounge.

This week, I am going to be somewhat scarce in the threads due to schoolwork. *

Tonight, I am planning to wrap up this current assignment, take and submit lesson 4 exam and begin the final lesson in my current class. *Also either Wednesday or Thursday, I will start Financial Accounting. *I need to take my time on this one since I start Managerial Accounting first in my second semester.

Danny, we will win.

It is not surprising the left wing activist would support Al Gore's movie. *If http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/pinocchio.gif ever comes out with a movie, they would absolutely rave about it.

Terri, would this be alright with you? Or, would it be better to keep everyone inform in here?

Good morning all~

It's early here, or late, whichever way you choose to view it. Been doing some internet reading, from fashion to history. Which leads me to post this:

June 4th, 1989: Tiananmen Square Protests

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr class="standard"><td>Quote </td></tr><tr class="standard"><td class="QUOTE">The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, also known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, June 4th Incident, or the Political Turmoil between Spring and Summer of 1989 by the Chinese government, were a series of demonstrations led by students, intellectuals and labour activists in the People's Republic of China between April 15, 1989 and June 4, 1989, leaving (according to Chinese authorities) between 400 and 800 civilians dead, and between 7,000 and 10,000 injured. An initial report from local hospitals put the number at around 2,000 dead.
more (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_pro tests_of_1989)

An important date in history indeed.

Being interested in history (as most of us here are) I am going to start a new thread in Member Topics: "Today in History"...in which we can discuss the significance, long-term effects, etc...I think it may be interesting, we'll see.

Anyway, since June 4th is already gone, I posted Tiananmen Square here...will move with some direction as where to put it.

BBL to address the morning topics...

edited for:

today's history includes: going off Gold Standard, the Six-Day War, and assasination of RFK. Interesting events.

I'm delighted! Any arrest of terrorists makes it a good day in which the public is safer.

Maybe our elected officials think their use of pleonasm will distract us from the fact that they do little of substance or value.

Good Morning! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/f_coffee.gif is ready. We are mostly potato-ing this morning, and slowly putting things away from Sonny-boy's open house. The whole event was a SMASHING success. We had plenty of food, never ran out of ice, lots of delightful guests, PERFECT weather--couldn't have been better.
The leftover grad cake is in the lounge. Sorry the fresh veggies are not available to snack on--they got catapulted last night, and the dip wound up taking a http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/heli1.gif ride *snicker*
Got an unexpected phone call this morning--the guys are on their way here to set up Mom and Dad's house !!!!! isn't that fabulous? Guess I will be hostessing another bash soon--we will be having a housewarming for them when all's said and done.
RD I think a history thread is just a fabulous idea! Sonny-boy has made us proud, he will be starting college this fall to become a history teacher. Hopefully he learns it right, I don't know what he will be fed at the college he is going to but I have my concerns. He told us recently that one of the teachers at his HS stated that "America greatly overhyped the Cold War". HUH? Even Hubby was disgusted over that one. That child of a teacher was probably not around when Kruschev banged the podium at the UN and said "we will bury you!". Even I am too young to remember that one. I mentioned to Sonny-boy that when people laugh off comments like that, they usually wind up wishing they hadn't--like when nobody paid attention to Mein Kampf. Sonny-boy is tired of hearing that line about "those who will not learn the lessons of history...."
Well got chairs to put back in the basement and some alterations to do, plus mounds of accumulated laundry, so must get those hands busy. Y'all have a wonderful day!
Blessings,
Sewing Susie

Just so everyone knows, the new spin on that quote is that Kruschev meant, "We will outlast you." Like we (the system) will live longer than you (our system) and see you buried...not that he was making an aggressive statement toward the US...a-HEM!

OK, back on (any) topic...

America's worst drivers live in ... (http://moneycentral.msn.com /content/Insurance/Insureyourcar/P151501.asp?GT1=8288 )

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr class="standard"><td>Quote </td></tr><tr class="standard"><td class="QUOTE">Nearly 10% of America's drivers couldn't pass a DMV licensing test if they had to take it today. Could you? Plus: See how your state fared.

By MSN Money staff

At least one of every five drivers doesn't know when to use bright lights, how to follow directional arrows or when highways are the most slippery, results from a national driver's test show.

GMAC Insurance administered a 20-question test -- similar to a traditional licensing test at the local DMV – to 5,288 drivers and released the results last week. Of those tested, nearly 10% were unable to answer enough questions correctly to achieve a passing score of 70.

>snip

The lowest average score came out of Rhode Island, whose drivers in the sample averaged a 75.1; more than a quarter of Rhode Island drivers in the sample failed the test. The District of Columbia, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York posted average scores almost as low, and failure rates in the region averaged 16%.

Yes I have known for some time that we have a shortage of good doctors; that is why I have formulated health care plan that would raise the real pay to doctors and all other health care providers while reducing the overall cost of health care. By eliminating 90% of the paper work and all of the costs associated with insurance company overhead and profits there would be a ton of money to buy more doctors and hospital beds without costing us more of our national GDP. I have yet to speak to a health care provider that didn’t like my plan but it would be politically difficult to get off of the ground. My plan would eliminate Medicare, Medicaid, V.A. health care and even parts of military health care but every American citizen and that includes the Congress, would have the exact same coverage.

The Ottoman Turks
Adolph Hitler & The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem
Ayatollah Khumeni
Osama Bin Laden

John Mohammed
John Malvo
Richard Reid
Zachariuas Moussari
Jose Pedilla
Mahmoud Abidininajad
Saddam Hussein
Mohammed
Yassir Arafat
Hamas
Hezbollah
Al Qaeda
The PLO
The PFLP
The Muslim Brotherhood
The Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade
Al Fatah
The Taliban

(and those are just the one's whose names i can pronounce!) Since we are talking about conflict here, I have only listed individuals and organizations whose stated purpose was (or is) to destroy Israel, the Jews, the West, or Christianity, not merely the spread of their religion. Hello everyone

Grocery shopping is done, banking is done, guess that's enough errands for now.

Dark and cloudy but no rain, so I'm happy. We've gone from almost drought conditions, to too much rain and minor flooding. For the next few weeks, I'm sending our rain to Florida. I know you need it and we no longer do.

After being in my secret identity http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/anon.gif for the weekend, it's time to get back to the very serious business of trying to save America for those that come after us.

So.....I'm off to check the threads http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tiho.gif ....yes, I know I'm going in the wrong direction, but this is a secret shortcut.

OW, your comment about "my own eyes" made me remember one. In Detroit there were lots of places (strip clubs) that had "Live Nudes" displayed on a sign outside. The Live part is what seemed stupid to me. Like who would go to a strip club to see a dead nude?

I checked out the worst driver site. Indiana ranked fairly well. But I can assure you that no one knows how to drive here. If they are not maniacs driving 20 mph over the speed limit and turning right on red in front of speeding traffic, then they are going 20 mph under the speed limit and waiting til the light turns yellow to proceed.

Driving in Rhode Island must be a nightmare! We already knew that Massachusetts was a death trap, but of the 22% who failed there, all but one was named Kennedy. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hi all. I've been away for a while, but I've been busy. But wanted to drop a quick note to let y'all know about a little project I've been working on. If you're familiar with digg.com, you'll have a sense of the project, but instead of tech news, I have a religious news community and accompanying podcast:

CrossFeed Religious News (http://www.crossfeednews.co m)

Hope I'm not overstepping here, but I'm hoping to get some good conservative input there, and I & my podcast cohost are both conservative. We discuss church and state issues, life issues, and all kinds of other stuff that I thought would be of interest to many of you. Not enough conservative (esp. conservative Christian) podcasts out there.

Y'all have not LIVED til you go down a 3 lane, major thorofare here on Cape Coral, during season. HUGE, OLD cars going 3 abreast, 22 mph, and seemingly propelled by remote control. WHY seemingly by remote control? Because you can't see anybody driving the cars!

OLD ancient people, driving along, totally unconscious of anyone else on the road.

Many will be in the far left lane and suddenly decide, "Ooopppsie, I have to turn RIGHT," and they swing these huge monstrosities LEFT, causing, literally pile-ups and accidents behind and to the side of them.

I have come to the conclusion that these people have had their keys taken away from them up North but they stash a car here for when they come for winter.

When 16 yo went for her driver's license, we were standing in line, and I was chatting away with others. One old couple came back from the head of the license renewal line. She was holding a white cane and touching the man's shoulder, she was obviously blind. The old man was shuffling along, behind a wheeled walker, barely moving. The pepper of an older gal, in line with us, maybe sixty, blurted out, "so, which one of you got yer license." The blind women retorted, "HE did, can't you see I'm blind." The woman who was mouthing off, said, "he can't hardly WALK, and he got a license?" "Well," huffed the blind woman, "Can't you see he needs a driver's license, I'm blind and he can't walk..."
NO word of a lie, Folks, no word of a lie.

Hi everyone. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif

I am home from work. *It was a good day today.

I need everyone's prayers right now. *

This morning, I received a phone call regarding my cat Black. *His lab results didn't come out too good. *His thyroid level went from 3 to 17, which is extremely high. *He will go back in two weeks to be recheck.

I love Governor Jeb Bush. *He has been a great governor for our state. *He wouldn't win in 2008, maybe in 2012. But, not now.

Most drivers here in Florida drive http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif. *They will not use their signal if they want to pass you. *They will cut in front of you if your not too careful. *If you are driving within the speed limit, they think you are driving too slow. *And, they block intersections.

Please check the prayer thread. *One of members needs our prayers right now.

Looks like this is "bash the OLD FOLKS day" in the precinct--I won't take any personal offense since I quit driving of my own will when the arthritis in my neck was so bad that I couldn't see behind me. BUT, I'm sure there are still lots of folks out there in their 70s and even 80s who can still drive very well. My grandfather was made to take a driving test when he was 92 years old and passed with flying colors.

And, I bet Joy will tell you that using a walker doesn't prevent one from being a good driver. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Anyway, there's going to be a chat in the same room where we have online church this evening, so if anyone wants to drop by, chat, meet a few very nice folks, you are invited and would be very welcomed.

Just click on my sigfile to get there.

Ya'll have a good evening.

Good Monday To All!

Today was a good day, I guess. I am trying to hire 5 more people, but I am having trouble finding even one who is qualified. Where have all the flowers gone? http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Growing old is not pleasant, but it could even be dangerous if proper caution is not exercised.

I love the older people. I care for the older people. And, I am very merciful to the older people. But, there is a time to hang-up the things that are dangerous to yourself and to others.

I promise to do the same as I grow older. For instance, even now, I will not sky dive, water ski, prize fight, lift anything over 100 pounds, or pick a fight in a bar. *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

We must learn to curtail our youth as we grow older! *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Let me tell ya, Colorado came in #15 on that list but don't you believe it. You slow down for a yellow light here and you'll get killed. Yellow means hammer down.

This is a young town and they drive like they're all on the race track. I don't stop for yellow either. Don't call the cops. They're too busy running speed traps. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif

Tonight, I was going to take and submit my fourth exam for my current class, but I got tired and frustrated. *So, I am going to arise early and start back on it again.

Also, I just tried to contact school to ask them about my proctoral examination kit and they are close. *They told me, they would send it to me once I have submitted 60% of my exams and I still haven't receive it.

We have http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif drivers here too. *They won't even stop for a red light, because they are going too fast. *They will slowdown when they see a police car.

As one of the world's most patient driver's, and a close observer of those who seem to be the worst of the worse. I will break it down as follows:

Drivers between ages of 16 to 20:
Think they have figured out the art of driving like no other before them, and that everyone else is screwing up by simply being in there way. *

Drivers between ages of 20 to 25:
Think they're veteran driver's already and will teach you a lesson if you dare be in their way when they were planning on getting in the same lane as you just did, even though, just two seconds ago they were barely visible in your review mirror. So they whip around you leaving only inches to spare between vehicles. It'll make you think twice about ever switching to the same lane again when they're in it doing 100 mph won't it? (In their minds of course) The very next day this same stretch of highway is backed up for miles, and when you FINALLY get to the area where an accident had taken place, you go Ah man, that sucks, poor people blah blah blah, then later on you realize something seemed very familiar about one of the vehicles. Sure enough, it was most likely the very same vehicle that had just about knocked you off the road the day before! Not a very good lesson to teach on their part after all.

Driver's between ages 25-30:
Just as stupid as the younger ones.

Driver's between. To hell with it:
Let's be realistic,,,They suck at all ages. But 99.9% of the time, it isn't the older ones that seem to be problematic. They're just a little slower some times, but not always.

Do you have any telecommute jobs? http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
The unemployment rate here in Michigan is a lot higher than that. And I don't think that there are any jobs here that Americans won't do either. Whether all those who are seeking are qualified or not, I would have a hard time saying. It's getting so that kids seem to either do spectacularly well in HS and go on to college and to stellar careers, or they pfutz through some of HS, drop out, have kids, do dope, work at burger-flippin' type jobs, and complain that rich white Republicans hate them and are responsible for all their troubles.
I have a BAS in Occupational Safety and Health, and there aren't many of those jobs around. I did see an ad in the GR Press for a Safety Officer/Risk Manager for our local Blood Center, so will apply for that. I could do a wide variety of things, I have lots of both academic and life experiences. I think that most of the employers I have applied to are suspicious of the fact that I got my degree in '81 and "NOW she's looking for a job??!??" (Like raising three kids isn't an enormously challenging career?)
My biggest issue is the commute. There are jobs in Grand Rapids proper, but I would burn my whole paycheck from an entry-level job on the commute. That happened last year with the Bridal Shop I sewed for. Hence, the frantic efforts to work independently at home.
<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr class="standard"><td>Quote </td></tr><tr class="standard"><td class="QUOTE">I love the older people. I care for the older people. And, I am very merciful to the older people. But, there is a time to hang-up the things that are dangerous to yourself and to others.
Likewise. My 82-year-old Mom still drives herself around amazingly well. She did tell me that when she gets so she can't drive any more, that I am to take her keys and that's that. We'll see....she can sputter a good one when she's crossed. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
We have red-light runners around here. They speed a bit but not too much, but will run thru a light long after it's red. Cameras are being contemplated. I hate to see that kind of thing happen, but when drivers won't obey the laws the Law must step in.
The big news of the day here, is that we got a phone call this morning that the crew was coming to set Mom and Dad's house together! They came and did their thing, and now we have a whole house instead of two pieces. They still have a lot of cosmetic stuff to take care of, but at least we are underway again instead of waiting. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif About cotton-pickin' time!
Still have two huge baskets of laundry to fold--back to business.
Blessings,
Sewing Susie

Great points Danny.

We sure have our fair share of drivers here.

I have seen and observe drivers blocking intersections especially where I work. *I have seen them running red lights. *I don't immediately go when the light turns green. I look in all directions.

R-D,

And, it's still a Taboo topic and not allowed in the history books to this day!
<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr class="standard"><td>Quote </td></tr><tr class="standard"><td class="QUOTE">The topic is still a political taboo in mainland China, where any discussion of it is regarded as inappropriate or risky.[citation needed] The only media coverage takes the Communist Party of China's view: that it was a necessary action to ensure stability. It is common for Chinese, especially younger Chinese who live far from Beijing, to be entirely unaware of the Tiananmen protests.[citation needed] Every year there is a large rally in Hong Kong, where people remember the victims and demand that the CPC's official view be changed.
Good evening,

Katy, I hope Black turns out to be OK. You sound slightly frustrated. Things will work out, give yourself a chance.

Yeppers, old folks who use walkers are still good drivers. I walk a mile every other day with my walker, and I am a good driver. The one thing that really bothers me about driving these days is people who cut back in my lane too soon forcing me to put on my brakes. Also that person who insists on getting in the fast lane and then driving 10 miles under the limit. They should know that that is my lane and I drive about 7 miles over the limit http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif and they need to move over and let me by.

I liked driving in Colorado, and out West in general.

With Eglin Air Force Base at my back door, I have to deal with all the jet pilots on the roads, and you can always tell who they are http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Still busy doing data input for next year's Convention. UGH, I despise it, but will feel good once this part is done. Then I can add a few names at a time. I still have about 139 to put in.

In less than two weeks we leave for the National Convention. I think we are ready, reports are written, badges are ordered, hotel reservations made, now if gas prices stay down it will really help. I am hoping that when we get back things will let up a bit for us for a while. Would love to be able to enjoy those "lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer" again.

On to some threads.

Oh, PJ, hope you find some employees that are worth hiring.

Funny you should say that, Terri. I was just saying to my cousin on the way home from town that it's amazing the amount of old people who are working at grocery stores and fast food places.

I was telling him about one old fella who started working as a bag guy at Red Owl store after he retired about 15 years ago. The store is now Festival Foods and he's still working there. I asked him when he's going to retire from the grocery store and he said he doesn't want to. He enjoys the work and makes a little money while yakking it up with all the customers. One of the Culver's looks as though about 70% of their staff are retirees. I have a hunch the women look at it as a way to get out of housework & cooking all the time. She can bring dinner home from the restaurant! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laff.gif

Well, here in Michigan there's the National Music Camp in Interlochen; and less famous, but my beloved Alma Mater, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
I am suffering a bit of fatigue myself. Maybe it was that hours-long slog thru Dialup Internet Swamp to get to the shed with all those meatballs, beans, coffee, the flag, and of course the carrots and celery sticks and dip.
