Polls: Illegals a Serious Problem in U.S.

NewsMax

Most people in the United States think illegal immigration is a serious problem. A solid majority oppose making it easier for illegal immigrants to become legal workers or citizens.

Some findings in recent polling:

Some 59 percent say they oppose allowing illegal immigrants to apply for legal, temporary-worker status, an NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll found.

More than six in 10, 62 percent, say they oppose making it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens, according to a Quinnipiac University poll. Nine in 10 in that poll say they consider immigration to be a serious problem - with 57 percent of those polled saying very serious.

Three-fourths say the United States is not doing enough along its borders to keep illegal immigrants out, a Time Magazine poll found.

The NBC-WSJ poll was taken in March, Quinnipiac in February and Time in January. The NBC-WSJ and Time polls surveyed about 1,000 adults and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The Quinnipiac poll of 1,892 registered voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

*Democrats and some misguided Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee may have come down on the wrong side of this issue.

I agree that may be true because there is going to be a big backlash if the pro-illegal marches continue.

I don't put much faith in immigration polls because the people who answer them don't seem to back up their responses with any action but things just may begin to change now.

I can't figure out who is the prime organizer behind the demonstrations. The Democrats have demogogued and rabble-roused every issue to come down the pike during the Bush presidency and this one is no different. However, this immigration thing is fraught with political danger and the only course I see is to take a resonable, honest tack, as the president has done, and if the Dems want to committ political suicide, let them have at it.

prime organizer , i hear that some of the organization of the demonstrations came from the head of an organization called - border angels - , he was on bill o'reilly last night bragging about his success in the organization of the demonstrations . i also have been hearing that the - catholic church [mahony]- opposes control of the border and backs unfettered immigration and therefore supported the demonstrations . also - spanish - launguage radio was pretty influential in the organization of the demonstrations . i don't speak spanish so i didn't hear the announcements but i do know that spanish language radio is a big deal in los angeles and i know they were organizing . all the above groups are all laughing at america as they read american message boards throughout america complain about illegal immigration in the usa .

Civil Rights? (http://www.civilrights.org/issues/immigration/details.cfm?id=38851 )

The article is ironic in the fact that foreign citizens are dictating what American domestic policy should do. The letter to the President is an outrage to all American citizens. Note the date.

Start with these groups:

League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)
Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)
National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials
(NALEO) Educational Fund
National Council of La Raza (NCLR)

I have visited their websites which appear to be benign (they all claim to be benevolent), but I have heard some very volatile rhetoric in various news articles--esp. La Raza. There are others that believe in AZTLAN that the Southwest needs to be taken over to reclaim the land Mexico lost in the Mexican-American War.

You can add MEChA to that list.
this is what they espouse on over 400 college and high school campuses from coast to coast.

In the spirit of a new people that is conscious not only of its proud historical heritage but also of the brutal "gringo" invasion of our territories, we, the Chicano inhabitants and civilizers of the northern land of Aztlán from whence came our forefathers, reclaiming the land of their birth and consecrating the determination of our people of the sun, declare that the call of our blood is our power, our responsibility, and our inevitable destiny.

We are free and sovereign to determine those tasks which are justly called for by our house, our land, the sweat of our brows, and by our hearts. Aztlán belongs to those who plant the seeds, water the fields, and gather the crops and not to the foreign Europeans. We do not recognize capricious frontiers on the bronze continent

Brotherhood unites us, and love for our brothers makes us a people whose time has come and who struggles against the foreigner "gabacho" who exploits our riches and destroys our culture. With our heart in our hands and our hands in the soil, we declare the independence of our mestizo nation. We are a bronze people with a bronze culture. Before the world, before all of North America, before all our brothers in the bronze continent, we are a nation, we are a union of free pueblos, we are Aztlán.

Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada.

That last line is really an eye-opener.

"...we are a nation, we are a union of free pueblos, we are Aztlán."

*We are also a bunch of fruitcakes if this is how we talk and what we believe.

I believe that you should "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" (Sun Tzu) so I read NY Times and Boston Globe daily. These are two articles that I believe are relevant to this discussion.

Seems enough did not listen to the advice because I saw enough Mexican flags and many hate America slogans on signs to last a lifetime.

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr class="standard"><td>Quote </td></tr><tr class="standard"><td class="QUOTE"> Immigration Issue Remains Divisive (http://www.rasmussenreports .com/2006/March%20Dailies/Immigration.htm)

March 30, 2006--As Congress considers legislation to reform the immigration process, the nation remains divided on how to proceed.

By a 65% to 25% margin, Americans say it is more important to reduce the number of illegal immigrants entering the U.S. than it is to expand legal opportunities for foreign workers to get jobs in the U.S.

However, that doesn't translate into an overwhelming public desire to force illegal aliens out of the country. Thirty-nine percent (39%) of Americans say there should be some way for illegal aliens with a job to stay in the U.S. legally. Forty-four percent (44%) disagree while 17% are not sure.

Fully a quarter (25%) of those who believe reducing illegal immigration is the top priority also believe that some way should be found to keep illegal immigrants in the country legally
[/QUOTE]

Rassmussen has a good record for accuracy. There is some interesting use of words though that kind of spin the results.

For example, the title says the issue is &quot;divisive&quot; but the poll results show overwhelming support for enforcement.

And why wouldn't this sentence&quot;

&quot;Fully a quarter (25%) of those who believe reducing illegal immigration is the top priority also believe that some way should be found to keep illegal immigrants in the country legally&quot;

Have said:

&quot;Fully three quarters (75%) of those who believe reducing illegal immigration is the top priority also believe that some way should be found to deport illegal immigrants in the country illegally&quot;
