After months of speculation concerning its eventual composition, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's government was sworn in this week. The big surprise was the unexpected swap of Finance Minister Silvan Shalom and Foreign Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

Though the choice of Shalom for the post of foreign minister leaves much to be desired, Netanyahu's decision to take up his new post may end up saving Israel's economy. While the task facing Netanyahu is certainly a daunting one, the new finance minister has the power, coalition and ideas to make a turnaround possible.

For starters, in the negotiations with Sharon over his appointment, Netanyahu succeeded in making himself the most powerful finance minister in Israel's history. In addition to having the prime minister's director general subordinate to him on all economic matters and presiding over the Government Companies Authority, the new finance minister will be the first in Israeli history to head the Economic Cabinet.

Very clever. Netanyahu is indeed the one man who can possibly save Israel's economy, even in the midst of a war within its borders (which is essentially what the Intafada and other Palestinian terrorism is). Sharon is utilizing his resources to their utmost potential. He would have made a good scout (or CEO).
