The war with Saddam is coming, that much is for certain. How we feel about it, as Americans and Jews, is another story.
We all know George Bush didn’t send tens of thousands of American troops to the Mideast for an elaborate exercise in military training, and the president would not have insisted for months that Saddam Hussein was evil and must go, unless the U.S. was prepared to act. But the prospect of a major military attack on a dangerous despot who has the ability and inclination to turn his weapons on innocent civilians, at home and throughout the region, is fraught with danger.
Many of us are deeply concerned about the casualties that are sure to result on both sides. We worry the war will not go as quickly or smoothly as the administration hopes. We are fearful, too, about retaliatory terror attacks from our enemies, and the strong possibility of Israel bearing the brunt of Saddam’s anger and frustration.
Despite, or because of, the Israel factor, American Jews have about the same level of support for the war as the rest of America. Close to 60 percent are in favor, though every thinking person has grave reservations about this enterprise. No one is saying “war is swell.”
