Who Bears the Burden? Demographic Characteristics of U.S. Military Recruits Before and After 9/11
by Tim Kane, Ph.D.
Center for Data Analysis Report #05-08

A few Members of Congress, motivated by American combat in the Middle East, have called for the reinstatement of a compulsory military draft. The case for coercing young citizens to join the military is supposedly based on social jus*tice—that all should serve—and seems to be but*tressed by reports of shortfalls in voluntary enlistment. In a New York Times op-ed on Decem*ber 31, 2002, Representative Charles Rangel (D– NY) claimed, “A disproportionate number of the poor and members of minority groups make up the enlisted ranks of the military, while most priv*ileged Americans are underrepresented or absent.”[1] This claim is frequently repeated by crit*ics of the war in Iraq.[2] Aside from the logical fal*lacy that a draft is less offensive to justice than a voluntary policy, Rangel’s assertions about the demographic makeup of the enlisted military are not grounded in fact.

Do you not wish Rangel would just find an island to live on with Jimmy Carter and Algore? Some place far far away- maybe with padded walls, and paper shoes?

Now...should the Army get tapped into permanent diaster relief status (a horrible idea in my mind,) Rangel will probably come back and try the draft song and dance all over again.

In the meantime- Rangel needs to take another hit off his doobie and relive the 60's on his own time.

Why, of course. But he may have to vote against it again depending on which way the winds are blowing.

He proposes a bill, then votes against it! Now there's a man with absolute conviction.

If I knew for sure that Rangel could actually read, I'd send this to him. But I have a feeling that he can't.

Great article Danny. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif

I wish we can send this tub of lard to an island all by himself. He has a lot of the same qualities as his cohorts. They propose something then they vote against it.

Danny, you can go ahead and send it to Rangel - I'm sure he has stolen enough in his career to hire someone to read for him. Nancy, the island would have to be quite large - we have a long list of idiots to accompany them.

Danny, go ahead and send that article to Rangel. He would love it.

Nothing from Rangel, or those of his ilk, is "grounded in fact".

Without conjecture, suppositions, feelings, and downright lies, they would not have much to say or back their distorted viewpoints.
