Jeb Bush takes aim at Louisiana's hurricane effort
Carlos Sadovi
Chicago Tribune
NAPLES, Fla. - While applauding state and local efforts to deal with the onslaught of Hurricane Wilma, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush took the opportunity Monday to blast what he said were Louisiana's failed attempts to deal with Katrina.
Bush said that unlike Louisiana, Florida organized local efforts to bring people to shelters and to transport evacuees.

The State of Florida has no state income tax, and it's high time they instituted one and earmarked it for hurricane relief. We the taxpayers shouldn't have to keep bailing these people out year after year. People who want to live in hurricane-prone areas should bear the financial responsibility themselves. After all, it's not like it's a once-in-a-lifetime event.
That said, Governor Bush is right. Compare how Texas handled Rita and Florida handled Wilma to how Louisiana handled Katrina. The states with Republican governors came through with flying colors, while the one with a democrat governor is still whining.
Coincidence?

There are only a handful of states in the United States that don't have a state income tax...they are: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. *Tennessee and New Hampshire only tax dividends and interest incomes. *So you see, there are many other states that are proned to disasters of all types...and they have a state income tax. *I'd still like to know your point, Rocks48. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Well, as a Floridian I can say no we do not have a state income tax but you really wouldn't want to pay the OTHER taxes we pay in the form of taxes on housing, business licensing for everyone including grass cutters etc. down the line that other state residences do not pay. We also have a much higher sales tax than most states I have lived in. And, btw, I don't know where the government help is showing up here for natural disasters since everyone I know either "fixes" the damage themselves or has the help of insurance companies if they choose to pay off on a claim.
I have been through several hurricanes and saw NO government help coming in except for FEMA loans which are to be paid back, a few FEMA trailors that housed welfare recipients that don't pay taxes anyway.
Unlike Louisiana we basically help ourselves and our neighbors. Look at the population statistics and you will see that 60% of the population does live near the coasts. No matter where you live there are natural disasters that need to be addressed whether they are hurricanes, tornados, flooding, land slides or forest fires. I don't think that there is anywhere in this country that Floridians could move that they wouldn't be effected by any of this. If you know of a place that can take in an extra 19 million people and growing let me know and I will spread the word. How is the housing situation in your neighborhood Rocks48?

I disagree on implementing a state income tax, and I also disagree for the taxpayers having to salvage and rebuild the damage. The party that said it should be the responsibility of those who wish to live in these areas to rebuild for themselves is right. There is nothing in the Constitution that authorizes government to take our money and spend it of foolish people. Those who refused to leave and rode out the storm deserve little or no support. If anyone wants to voluntarily contribute to their welfare, that is great, but do not take our tax money and spend it on these foolish people, in Florida, New Orleans, Texas or any place else. If you haven't read the response by Davy Crockett when he was in the Senate to the request to contribute for victims of a fire in Washington DC, you should get a copy and read. There was a true statesman and a great American who correctly interpreted the Constitution. Would that we had such elected officials today.

Jed Bush is a great Gov., he does not stick his head on a bushel basket when something he does not like comes along. He imbraces it with action, he does not sit on his b--- waiting for others to do his job. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Her mind went Blank!! OH
We pay a high property tax in Texas. Republicans are as bad as democrats about giving us tax relief. It all boils down to the fact the power brokers want an income tax and the people aren't willing to give it too them.
Anyone ever heard of one tax being lowered just because a new one was added? Not me.

she is still around, but keeping awful quiet right now since she spit into the wind and it came back on her face.
pt, you are right, we have a 10% sales tax here, but we are about the only state that has a homestead exemption but with these days of homes over 70,000 which is the cut off, there is still plenty of money raised in property taxes.

You really want to know? She is boondoggling like crazy putting off the Senate hearing committee on submitting evidence of what she did during and after the storm, and she is appointing commission after commission of political cronies to look here and there and everywhere to find money and so confuse the situation in Lousisana that she can allay blame and destruction as long as possible. Main thing she is doing right now is stalling everywhere she can to see how much money congress is going to offer her. But she and Nagin both are starting to realize that, like some of the comments on this forum, no one in the rest of the US wants to give her any.

Jeb Bush does a wonderful job during emergencies but I still see on TV that people in South Florida are complaining about the slowness of his response with aid this time. It's true that the storm wasn't predicted to hit the east coast like it did, but isn't it the responsibility of individuals to be prepared to take care of themselves for the first few days until help can get to them? The airports are all closed in the area, there is no electricity, and it takes time to clear the roads so help can get to the areas where it is needed. People were already complaining the day after Wilma hit the area. Seems they think Jeb Bush can perform miracles. Patience is a virtue.

For several days prior to “Wilma” reaching Mexico,
the probable “storm track” indicated S Florida as
the likely area to be hit. Then the storm stalled
over Cancun for two more days and S Florida was
indicated as the definite path for “Wilma”.
In all of that time of nonstop news coverage of
Hurricane Wilma wasn’t it clear that it probably
would be a good idea to get prepared?
This is the same region that local residents couldn’t
figure out how to vote correctly, and couldn’t tell the
difference between “crybaby Algore” and other
candidates. Also the local dimbulbs created the
“swinging chad” controversy leading me to think
that if you’re too dumb to vote correctly, then
you’re too dumb to survive without the support
of all agencies of our Federal Government.

Up here in region around N Idaho, and in many
other areas around our USA, this is a yearly

taught me to “be prepared”, it’s their motto

l1m89, you are absolutely correct...this is the same area of Florida that gave us the pregnant chad, the hanging chad and b.s. by the ton! They are probably celebrating that they can blame another Bush for their own inadequacies. You would think by now that bunch of people would have generators that kick on the minute electricity goes out and plenty of ice...if for nothing else, their cocktails! Gov. Jeb Bush is doing all he can to help these victims. He told everyone from the beginning to take the necessary precautions and be prepare to leave. Many people didn't leave because they believe our government will help them in a second. These are the same people who complained about the 2000 election.
Rep. Katherine Harris deserves to be our next Senator of the United States Congress.
