NEW YORK (GOPUSA News) -- Saying that substantive cooperation by Iraq with U.N. Resolution 1441 shall be "active," and that "it is not enough to open doors," chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix cited example after example of "disturbing incidents and harassment," as he reported to the U.N. on the ongoing inspections in Iraq.
Blix found little to suggest that Iraq has in fact disarmed as required by the current, or previous, United Nations resolutions. Concerning the twelve thousand page dossier released by Iraq on December 7, 2002, Blix said, "Regrettably, the 12,000 page declaration, most of which is a reprint of earlier documents, does not seem to contain any new evidence that would eliminate the questions or reduce their number."
Many opponents of military action against Iraq had hoped that the long awaited inspections report would contain some indication that Iraqi cooperation had been sufficient to prove disarmament. Item after item in Blix's report disarmed this hope. "Iraq has declared that it only produced VX on a pilot scale, just a few [metric] tons and that the quality was poor and the product unstable," Blix said. "UNMOVIC, however, has information that conflicts with this account. There are indications that Iraq had worked on the problem of purity and stabilization and that more had been achieved than has been declared."
