Did anyone see any of Michael Brown's testimony to Congress yesterday? He was very outspoken about the leadership of Louisiana saying, "“My biggest mistake was not recognizing by Saturday that Louisiana was dysfunctional." He may have made some mistakes but I think he's exactly right about who messed up the response to Katrina. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yes.gif

The First Lady will be appearing in an episode of "extreme makeover." Apparently the show will be filmed in Biloxi and will be about helping out in a shelter. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif

NO Police Superintendent resigned yesterday without giving a reason. He made it very clear he wanted the press to leave him alone. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif At least 249 NO cops deserted their posts during Katrina. A tribunal will examine each case.

At least 17 http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/jacka.gif senators have announced they will vote to confirm Judge Roberts. The vote should be held on Thursday. The president is expected to announce his next nominee very soon after Robert's confirmation. Do you have a prediction? Will it be a confirmed conservative? A constructionist? A woman? A minority?

Lynndie England got 3 years for her part in Abu Ghraib. Do you think that's fair?

Locally we have some 1,700 Katrina evacuees and our local officials have said enough already. Now we are being painted as unwelcoming, ungiving, and stingy. No good deed goes unpunished. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif

Ah well, this community is not Houston, but we have done and will be continuing to do, our share. We have sent a number of rescue teams and are now bringing in animals from the south. They are all finding foster homes and will no doubt be adopted if their owners don't step forward.

We all want to give but we also must remember our local charities and normal giving. Those needs continue and it seems to me we will be taxed to the hilt for Katrina victims relief. Not really. I don't like what she did, but is prison really going to do anything to reform her? I don't think so. I think all the reform she needed, she received when everything she did was made public. She made some really really stupid decisions.

Good morning,

Guess who woke up and can't get back to sleep right away so decided to post early today.

As far as I am concerned every community and person does what they can. Some have talent to share, some have homes, some have money, and others have time and good health and can volunteer. 1700 sounds like an awfully large number to me, and if I was one of the 1700 I would be gracious and say Thank you. After all you didn't have to do any of it.

After 911, our local charities really suffered from a lack of funds. So, now I am more careful, and try to keep an equal amount going locally. I dole out only a certain amount over the period of a year, each donation in the same amount, and carefully divided between, local, State, Political, Church, and extras like the Hurricane funds. (I have to admit, however, that Church seems to get the largest amount of funds, because they collect every week.)

I thought Michael Brown did a credible job yesterday. I just can't understand what they don't understand in the phrase "FEMA is not a first responder".
Had it been a terrorist attack, or a bomb, FEMA would not have been the agency called into service. So, to keep comparing a Natural Disaster to a Terrorist attack doesn't make much sense to me. Guess I am just dense.

I am not surprised that the New Orleans Police Chief resigned yesterday. Someone ought to send the tribunal the video clip of the two female police officers in Walmart who did nothing to stop looters and even participated in the looting. I didn't see any food or water in their grocery cart either.

I think three years for Ms. England was fair enough under the circumstances. Anyone with any common sense would never have condoned what was going on at Abu Ghairb. It could have been ten years.

I hope they hurry up and confirm Judge Roberts.

I have mixed feelings over this. As a paramilitary organization I look at it as cowardice and criminal - and then again - if I had been employed there - in the corruption and ineptness of leadership.... Well, I would never have taken a job there anyway so I guess my opinion does not matter.

Yes I think Mr Brown did a credible job yesterday and I must agree with him. I aw some headlines posted..that basically said..Brown accuses everybody else..passes the blame as it were. Well, if we were passing judgement..it would not be so much on Mr Brown..as it would be the entire state of Lousiana. The Governor and Mayor have done their best to blame everybody else..but I think in the end...the truth is going to come out.

Lynde England...do I think she got the right punishment? I dont think so.

I thought Brown did well and presented himself to be a much more competent person than I thought he was. *He was in a no win situation when he landed in LA. *His biggest mistake was that he presented reason and logic to a mayor who is an idiot. *Nagin is still angry that whites are telling the people of NO not to come back and pay their taxes yet. *There is no clean water or power in most of the city that is dry – for the moment – but Nagin wants them back. *If the governor was a black man he could arrest Nagin but a white woman would never get away with it.

RIM; Some of them were assigned by the PC to move new cars from the dealerships to their homes for safe keeping. *I hope that isn’t considered AWOL. *Why would anyone begrudge the police officers the use of cars that may have been flooded or striped by looters if left where they were?? *If the mayor and the PC had been thinking clearly they would have ordered the mandatory evacuation on Friday and had the city empty so that they could have moved more than cars and TVs to high ground in Dallas.

Lynnde England is being made a scapegoat. I don't agree with what she did, but the outrage was out of proportion to the offense.

Lynndie England is a sad young woman and perhaps not the brightest bulb in the pack, but I think if we weren't in a war of ideas and under constant attack by the liberals, she would have gotten less time. Certainly military personnel have done worse than what she did, with less results. I hate what she did, but I don't think prison will make her a better person and I don't think she's a threat to society. She'll be in prison and Michael Jackson is still free to do whatever he chooses to kids.

It's like our society is becoming so warped that the bigger and more horrendous the crime, the more sympathy you can expect.

Okay, for those who think the Twit of Abu Grab go harsh punishment: Her crime (aside from having pictures taken) was in treating POWs in a degrading fashion and breaking many laws, something America cannot get away with. *We are held to a higher standard than the rest of the world.

She broke Military law, broke international treaties agreements, damaged our image, and her actions gave the terrorists fuel to kill more of our soldiers. *She might as well have strapped the explosives to the homicide bombers herself.

If someone beats a member of the Klan, we don't say they should get a lighter punishment because the victim was likely guilty of greater crimes. *The same should apply here. *The Twit disgraced her uniform, her service, and her country. *As one who has served, I was and am deeply offended by her actions.

Did she get justice? *I won't presume to know all of the evidence, but I will say this: had I (while in uniform) broken the same rules she did, I would have gotten worse.

If we can casually criticise Crazy Cindy for encouraging the terrorists, we cannot ignore what this girl did, for it was as bad if not worse.

I may be AWOL for awhile. Rocky got a call while at school last night: his mother has fallen and broken her hip. She's in the hospital waiting for an orthopaedic consult. They prepped her for surgery last night.

In the meantime, my mother now decides she's ready to move in with us. We will need a bigger house or some serious remodeling. But, we still have not finished the remodel in Rockport!

Signs appear to be pointing in a direction we don't wish to take. Prayers would be most welcome, mostly that I can keep strong and up for the tasks I smell right around the corner...

Moving right along, I’m not surprised that this community is being criticized by some for not taking even more refugees. Originally the mayor said they could take 800 and it’s over twice that now. Many apartment managers have given empty apartments rent free for a few months and many citizens have furnished them. Employers have come forward with jobs. Schools have been welcoming. So, all in all, I think they have done enough. I say "they" because I don't live there, just close.

Sitting here listening to the Tony Snow Show. Tony’s current guest (as I am typing this) is John Fund. They are discussing the situtation down there in New Orleans. Fund said that Blanco is going to be a one term Governor. Well we already knew that. They also have a term limits law down there so a lot of the corrupt legislature people will be hitting the road. They were also discussing the refugees that were moved out of state and into other areas not signing up for aid. They were speculating that most of these were criminals on the lam.

I noticed that the food stuffs were getting low and I was hungry, So I fired up the grill and made grilled chicken sandwiches with southwest seasoning sprinkled on top and provalone cheese melted on it. Then I toasted some whole grain honey oat buns, placed the chicken on top and added some ranch dressing and fresh spinach leaves. I only had a dozen pieces of chicken so you might want to hurry and get them before Duncan and slickwilly get started.

I didn't realize that a dishonorable discharge and probation for a year was the same as excusing England. The last thing I would want on my military record would be a dishonorable discharge. I would think that would have a pretty harsh effect on the rest of her life and especially employment possibilities. Having to report to a probation officer for a year isn't exactly a picnic. She also has the punishment of her crime being national knowledge. People will point at her and say bad things about her for her whole life. I really don't see what 3 years in a prison cell will do for her or for us.

It simply means that taxpayers have to pay for her care for 3 years. And when she gets out (after spending 3 years with drug addicts, theives, and murderers) she'll be more randy than she is now.

I would hope that simply the public exposure England has received would be enough for other randy girls (or guys for that matter) to realize that behavior like this is not tolerated in the military.

If a college coed was given 3 years in prison for having sex with the whole football team, I would be shocked. While it is despicable behavior, I think it's only an imprisonable offense if she charges money.

It's a gleeful, gleeful day for liberals. Anybody hear Terry Moran of ABC News grill Scott McClellan about the DeLay indictment? Because of DeLay, Moran is claiming "widespread corruption" among Republicans in Washington. No evidence--just exaggeration. And no mention of decades of corruption among Louisiana democrats that Katrina is uncovering. (My dear, late Mom always told me there's a bright side to every situation. Is Katrina's bright side starting to show?)

While Tom DeLay is fighting off the indictment gators, I'd better get back to fighting off the busy, busy 'gators here at work.

Welcome to jrl1. Loved your article. Probably 85% of the people who say they detest President Bush...have no idea what he is like or about and only listen to MSM' opinion of him. Its really sad when we have a President who is such a nice man and who tries to do the right thing, and all the press is out to get him. I wouldnt take his job for even one day. He has had so much negative things thrown at him..I dont know how he does it? He has had more major problems than probably any one President has had. I think he has handled them admirably.

Poor Tom Delay..I knew if they kept on..they would find some way to zap him. I like him cause he is a fighter.

I just got off the phone with someone from the EPA. The EPA was conducting a survey. One of the last questions I was asked, describe your political views. I explain to her I am a Conservative Republican. I don't think she like my answer.

Katy, I don't doubt that for one minute. Several years ago I had the EPA come to my house because I had registered a complaint about the county dumping sludge on a pasture down the road from me. He claims there's nothing in the indictment to even indict Tom deLay. The indictment is actually against 2 of DeLay's associates and his name is just mentioned in the indictment some way. Re the DeLay indictment: this is only a "Level I" in the series of proofs in law: the standard is reason to believe. Given the data that the local DA gave to the Grand Jury, and in the absence of contrary data, the Grand Jury were bound by rule to bring back the decision they did.

Now the case goes to court, where the local DA doesn't fare too well. Were the Commodore an Attorney at Law, authorized by the State of Texas to practice law in that great State, his strategy would be to let the DA bring forth his witnesses, but not cross-examine them at that time. Rather, the Commodore would call them as witnesses for the defense. In the case of Texas v. DeLay et al, the last witness would be the DA himself. And every one of the defense witnesses would be examined as hostile witnesses, under the appropriate rules.

Although the DA has been thrown out in each of these cases, he is illustrating the Democrat mantra: Republicans are evil, Republicans practice hatred, Republicans are mean-spirited, racist, sexist, bigots, who want to starve the poor, kick Grandma out of the old folks' home, deprive women of the right to kill their babies, rape the land, and give tax breaks to the rich!
