9/11 relatives charge cover-up

WASHINGTON -- Sept. 11 family members are protesting a reported Pentagon attempt to close this week's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on a claim that military intelligence had lead hijacker Mohammed Atta in its sights as early as 1999.

"They want to sweep it under the rug," said Joan Molinaro, a former Eltingville resident, whose firefighter son was killed at Ground Zero.

"They have been denying this Atta thing up, down and sideways for weeks," she said. "And now they want to cover it up."

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Defense Department lawyers have blocked members of a data-mining intelligence team from testifying Wednesday before a congressional committee probing their claims that they identified the ringleaders of the Sept. 11 hijackers more than a year before the attacks.

The Senate Committee on the Judiciary sought testimony from several members of the team -- code-named Able Danger -- as part of their investigation into claims that the project identified Mohamed Atta and three of the other 18 hijackers as linked to al-Qaida in early 2000, according to Senate staffers.

Mark Zaid, an attorney representing a liaison to the team, Army reserve Col. Tony Shaffer, told United Press International that a letter to his client gave no reasons for blocking the testimony.

Terri, the link in the second article "can't be found".

Whenever I see a government entity trying to block something I always believe it's done because they always try to block investigations even if there's no national security involved simply because they've always done it that way!

I don't know how much will be discovered but to not investigate gives the appearance of a cover-up.

Apparently UPI has moved or withdrawn the story.

I changed the link to a similar one on Newsmax.

M-J, that was a dirty question!

After all, everyone knows that only conservatives can be help to a standard; liberals can only be judged by their intentions.

OK, it looks like there will still be a hearing, but a closed hearing. *I would assume a transcript of the hearing will be developed and a redacted version will be released so that our info gathering techniques will not be disclosed like they were during the first bombing of the WTC.

But we still need to know who did or didn't do what and when. *Individuals need to be held accountable (not like Sandy Berger was) and these individuals should not be permitted hide behind the classification label.

That's the understanding I got. They were just blocked from testifying in an open hearing. Makes sense to me.

It doesn't make sense to me. It sounds like a coverup.

What is going on here? We're talking about the Clinton administration knowing about Atta and the 911 hijackers in 1999.

Who in the Pentagon is pulling the strings here?

Is the Bush administration covering this up for Clinton or are there holdovers in a position to stifle the witnesses?

I want to know. Every citizen should want to know. Let the chips fall where they may.

Well said, I want to know exactly what my representatives are and were doing about this. I don't think that as a tax paying citizen, that is asking too much.

suffice it to say; whatever's going down - truth be dammed! it's all political at this point. so the Able Danger team is going to testify and it will be a classified hearing. ya wanna know something funny? i read this story on a Yahoo! news headline from the NYT. seems like we're not the only ones who are curious about this situation. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

I will stand by my original post for now anyway. *But now that Terri has brought this up, there seems to be a lot of stuff that Clinton and various Dems seem to be getting a pass on. *The Bush Admin. should have figured out by now that this "can't we all just get along" crap isn't working out. *Bush 41 still being chummy with Clinton is a little too much, especially with Clinton badmouthing Bush 43. *And yeah, how many holdovers are still on the payroll sabotaging the agenda and the investigations?

I might be mistaken but wasn't General Meyers selected as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs by Bile Clinton? Could the original coverup and now closed hearings be part of a President and the military conspiring to hush information? If so, we have got bigger problems in this country than we know. I believe there would have been only two people who could have had the power to quash Able Danger, those two being Meyers and Bubba. Of greater concern, why is Bush not stepping to the plate to insure the public's right to know? http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
