Baghdad - Iraq is preparing to take in thousands of people from across the world who have offered to be used as "human shields" against a US-led war, an official newspaper reported on Saturday.

Al-Qadissiyah quoted former Jordanian MP Mansur Murad, who has been campaigning for volunteers, as saying some 100 000 people had already come forward.

However, the daily gave no dates for the arrival of the volunteers, nor their exact numbers.

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz said on Thursday the regime backed the human shield volunteers.

Does this mean that we could lose some of our popular Hollywood celebrities? Maybe Rangel wouldn’t mind being drafted into the ranks of human shields.

Good one, GR.

Does anyone remember those old movies where the missionary always said that the natives would never turn against him and there was a fadeout just as the elephant was being made to kneel on him? Got to believe these human shields would suffer the same fate.

Good grief, can anyone really be this dumb?????

That brave old Saddam Hussein. Bless his courageous heart....... I think his next move is to surround Baghdad with cradles full of newborns (who of course, have all volunteered).

I'm not one to call for war, or the killing of people other than is absolutely necessary, but . .

As Ecclesiastes says, there is a time and place for everything. I fear that now is the time for war with Iraq, and we must either annihilate, or be annihilated. I have the utmost confidence we will be victorious, and I pray the price is not too great.

As for the peaceniks, if they offer themselves as human shields, they are not truly peaceful. It simply means they want to make themselves martyrs under the guise of wanting peace. Peace is good, but at the same time, war is inevitable when dealing with madmen like Hussein.

Sodamned Insein is definitely a coward, when he starts using civilians as human shields. I'm not sure how many are actual volunteers, but in my book, a person who volunteers to protect Hussein is aiding and abetting him, and is just as guilty as he is. This is a troublesome time for me, and I don't like seeing anyone die in war. But I'm not so stupid as to say war is never the answer, when sometimes it is the only answer.

And I'm sure these "volunteers" have been fed the same lie that all muslim terrorists are fed. *You know........they'll all go to heaven, 700 (?) virgins, etc, etc, etc.

Of course, the word "volunteer" probably means something completely different when it's coming from a crime boss like Hussein.
