I used this argument with someone tonight in a debate on the war with Iraq and it seemed to do the trick. Let me know what you think.

D: I'm so against going to war. This kind of aggression is what got us here in the first place.

Me: Aggression? What do you mean "this kind of aggression"?

D: We're going in there to kill people with no proof or good reason. That's wrong.

Me: What kind of proof would you want?

D: Well its more than that. If they haven't done anything wrong, we can't just send in the troops.

Me: Let me ask you something.

D: Ok

Me: Let's say one evening you're getting ready to settle down for the night, and you glance out your window and you see your neighbor across the street. And let's say that you've had arguments with your neighbor before about things and that you're not the best of friends. Now let's say that you don't really trust him either. You think he's got a couple of screws loose and that he's got a violent temper.

D: Ok

Me: Now let's say you see your neighbor on his front porch with a shotgun. And he's aiming that shotgun at your front window.

D: Um... ok

Me: Would you call the cops?

D: Yes.

Me: Why?

D: Well.... because... he might shoot me.

Me: But he hasn't shot you. He hasn't done anything wrong.

D: Yeah but.... well..... he might... no.... well.... ok I see what you're saying.

Hi Drewman http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif

Sounds like pretty sane reasoning to me. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif

What the "bleeding hearts" are not willing to see is the fact that Saddam has a horrible track record. How many millions of people must he kill and how many atrocities must he commit before they connect the dots?

We know he has absolutely no qualms about killing his own people ~ so just how safe are the surrounding countries if and when Saddam finally has the capacity to annihilate them?

Drewman, you just have to wonder how people like your friend have lived their lives.

How is it that they have so little understanding of the world and how it works? And why are there so many of them?

That's just a rhetorical question.

Then there are the others that understand very well but are actively working for the overthrow of this government for a myriad of reasons.

Drewman, your story could include that the neighbor’s kids have lose weight, look beaten and frightened and some are missing.

But it gives me chills to think that Terri is right that most of the opposition to the action against Iraq is opposition to what ever Bush does.
