With Ban In Place, Denver Euthanizing 3 Pit Bulls Daily
The Denver Channel
Since reinstating its pit bull ban in May Denver has impounded more than 380 pit bulls and is euthanizing them at an average rate of more than three a day.
The city maintains the ban protects its residents. Others say the law should target irresponsible owners and all dangerous dogs and the city should not ban by breed.

Pit Bulls are a big problem in Colorado. We've had a lot of people mauled.
Are they a problem where you live?

Yes. They are very popular with the Hispanic community. Several children have been scarred for life and the animals have been destroyed.
I used to think that a dog attacks only when trained that way. Not so anymore. A trucker friend brought home a beautiful Boxer that later mauled their son. Luckily, after several stitches to the top of his head and forhead, he was okay.
They euthanized the Boxer.

Yes, my area is big on Pit Bulls. Every successful redneck needs a Pit Bull to ride on top of his truck box on the back of his pick up. < /sarcasm>
Pit Bulls are very unpredictable. Some people raise them successfully and never have a problem. However, the breed name speaks for itself. They are "pit" fighting dogs and it takes very little to make them aggressive.
It's just a shame that behind most pit bulls is an ignorant human. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tqrolleyes.gif An out of control PB winds up being destroyed and the dumb ownder goes out and gets another one. When I lived in Miami they were banned from certain areas. Don't know about now.
IMO, the breed has outlived whatever usefulness it might have had. If this means planned extinction, then so be it. Along with this policy, there should also be a policy to fine or jail, or both, the people who own an animal that attacks humans. They should also have to pay damages to the victim.
Pit Bulls are not the only dogs that can be very aggressive. But most of the other breeds can be successfully trained to respect human commands. Unfortunately, most of the people (at least here) who own pit bulls don't have much more intelligence than the dog. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes2.gif

German Shepherds are a good example. However, when dad did his residency in Houston, that breed turned in more ER bite visits than any other!
Second most bites? Saint Bernards! Who in the world would have a Saint Bernard in South TX? http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I can testify to the biting by German Shepherds.
My BIL was walking down the sidewalk one day when all of a sudden, a German Shepherd tore through a hedge and attacked him, shredding his winter jacket and biting him before the owner could get through the hedge and control him. Thank God it was winter. Had it been summer, my BIL would have been the one shredded.
I trust no dog or cat completely. I was bitten by a tiny little dog while out walking on the road one day. It charged me and I wasn't even near their property or paying any attention to the dog. And I'm here to tell you that dog bites hurt like blazes. My leg throbbed for 3 days straight and the shot I had to get didn't help, either.

Any little mutt that chomps my ankle isn't going to need to go to the vet to be euthanized.

Sorry to be late to the pit bull party, but I've been away and am just getting caught up.
Years ago, our whole neighborhood in Ohio went to city council meeting about a pit bull in our area. The owners let the pit bull out without even being tied up and kids were waiting on that corner for the school bus. Later the dog went down the street and attacked another dog which was tied in their garage. The dog was severely bitten. We all feared the school kids would be next. Our council passed a resolution that to own a PB, the owner had to have a 6 foot chain link fence, with roof, and must show proof of insurance for the dog. The fines were high for noncompliance and the insurance companies don't want to insure these animals so the dog disappeared.
IMHO, every home needs a dog, but no one needs a pit bull.
