Liberals who objected to the passage of the Real ID Act of 2005 two months ago will be happy to know that federal immigration officials have uncovered twelve illegal aliens who managed to obtain licenses to transport hazardous materials thanks to lax standards under the old system.

In one case, a man from the terrorist hotbed of Pakistan - who had been ordered to leave the U.S. nine years ago - was found to be driving a tanker truck filled with gasoline for Exxon, the Knight Ridder news service said.

So what's your point Frou, that liberals are going to get a bunch of people killed in this country because of their policies? I think that's a good one. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yes, ranger, no flies on us! I really did appreciate the tone of this piece, about the liberals being 'happy to know.' ~smirk!~

Although, it makes me feel no safer!

RRB, I think Frou's point is that illegal aliens give her gas!

Yeah, too bad it's not laughing gas!

Seriously, does anyone else have a little bitty alarm going off in their heads on reading this?

Now, why would Exxon allow illegals to drive their hazmats? So their legal employees don't risk blowing up?

Hubs pays little attention to my participation on the forum. And then, one day last week he tells me about Brazilian illegals having some special exemption about deportation.

It seems he saw this reported on FOX, so it's not like he doesn't keep up with the news. But this really caught his eyes and ears.

Why are illegals from different countries not treated alike? Isn't illegal still illegal?

I just dont understand that at all.
To get my hazmat I had to go through a drug test, vision, FBI background check, show 3 forms of ID, birth certificate, SS card and current drivers licence, and that was 20 years ago. Are things LESS strict in the post 9-11 era?

Great question! I know hubs has to jump through all kinds of hoops to dispose of hazmats at work. Something about ISO 9000 certification. Wait, maybe that was when he was with Ray Ban.

Frou: "isn't illegal still illegal? Well, it depends on your definition of what isn't is. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I believe that it's changed recently but all I had to do was pass a test on procedures. Everybody's complaining about the cost. Some are refusing to renew. I'm probably going to let mine lapse if it cost's close to $100 anyway. It's been years since I hauled any.

I just got this off the VDOT site.

Effective January 31, 2005, the USA Patriot Act requires individuals applying for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a HAZMAT endorsement (HME) to be fingerprinted and complete a background records check.

Effective May 31, 2005, the Act also requires individuals renewing a CDL with a HAZMAT endorsement to be fingerprinted and complete a background check. The Act allows customers transferring a CDL with the HAZMAT endorsement from another state to transfer their valid HME background records check without the requirements for fingerprinting or showing proof of citizenship or immigration PROVIDED the background records check is verified by the state of issuance.

To complete a background records check application and be fingerprinted, you must visit one of the twelve DMV customer service centers equipped to process your application.

The non-refundable fee for the background check and fingerprinting is $83.00
