Europeans Hold Out on Iraq

NEW YORK (GOPUSA News) -- Secretary of State Colin Powell met with other foreign ministers at U.N. headquarters Monday, attempting to persuade them to enforce Security Council Resolution 1441, which promises Iraq "severe consequences" if it does not comply with U.N. inspections.
Powell said that war is not definite, but "if Iraq does not come into full compliance, we must not shrink from the responsibilities that we set before ourselves."
Powell met with mixed success. Great Britain has already pledged its full support, and British Foreign Minister Jack Straw took the opportunity to warn that "time is running out for Saddam Hussein." Britain has announced it will send 26,000 troops, 120 tanks, and 150 armored personnel carriers to Iraq in preparation for a possible war.
France and Germany, however, have yet to be convinced.
