MANY of the Hollywood celebrities behind the new campaign against gas-guzzling SUVs are hypocrites who consume huge quantities of fossil fuels in their stretch limos, Gulfstream jets and oversized Beverly Hills mansions.
TV producer Norman ("All in the Family") Lear, who is spearheading the conservation crusade along with columnist Arianna Huffington, built a garage for 21 cars five years ago which stands 45 feet tall.
"Lear's neighbors . . . contend that the structure, complete with a tennis court atop, was built in violation of city height restrictions," the Los Angeles Times reports. "Lear's parking garage has ruined the aesthetics of the wooded canyon."
Gwyneth Paltrow is appearing in ads for Lear's Enviromental Media Association (EMA) accusing SUV owners of supporting terrorism. But some of Paltrow's neighbors find her to be an odd choice for an anti-SUV poster girl.
"She drives a Mercedes-Benz SUV," says a tipster who lives down the block from Paltrow's West Village digs. "Not only does she drive an SUV, she selfishly parks it on the sidewalk in our neighborhood." Paltrow's publicist did not return calls.

Isn't it amazing that all the pronouncements that come down to us peons from on high (media stars< all genuflect>) somehow don't involve them?????? "Do as I SAY; not as I SUV!

Although I do not drive an SUV, I am guilty of driving a gas guzzler: 1998 super-charged Mustang GT. Yeah, yeah I know it was a mid-life crisis car, but I love driving fast and yes, it is red and it is a convertible. That said, are we attacking the messengers because we cannot assail the message?

I can assail the message with vigor - as previously posted, I drive a VW diesel that gets 34mpg in town and 44mpg on the highway and it emits 20% less CO2 than an equivelant gas engine. Also, as bio-diesel becomes available I will be using a renewable resource and to top it all off, the exhaust smells like french fries.

Der Alte, I do not think that you are assailing the message at all! It appears quite the contrary, you are conserving energy by driving a vehicle that gets great mileage. I think that the hypocritical lefties would be pleased with your choice of vehicles. Is driving a vehicle like yours the right thing to do? Is the message that the hypocrits are delivering correct? Ought I give up the Mustang for something more practical? Is my gas guzzler making us more dependent on countries that support terrorists?

The new Dodge HEMI engine produces more power but is more fuel efficient and burns cleaner. Anyone who has their eyes open knows that the auto industry is doing all that they can do to make their products cleaner and more efficient.
One of the most interesting innovations is a Ford idea. They put an air turbine of trucks that is used only to get the truck off of the line at top lights. The truck pumps up an air tank as it drives around town and when it needs the extra torque to get moving, which is when a truck is using giant amounts of fuel, the turbine kicks in and saves tons of fuel.
The hybrids are almost ready to go and will reduce fuel costs so much that OPEC will cry like little girls.
But even these things will not satisfy the liberals because the hybrids will still have the power to move an SUV with better acceleration than they have now. The liberal ideology is one of decline. Just as we see the liberal elite asking others to sacrifice what they themselves would never give up it is their goal to keep the little people from catching up to them.
The liberals are a strange mix of have it alls and have nothings. The ones with plenty want to be revered and honored by the poor who they expect to kiss their a**es for the few crumbs that they brush onto the floor.
On the other hand the conservatives who make the bread expect everyone to either mix dough or collect wood.

Great car Bob.
That is the real target of the left, powerful vehicles. They love VWs but not Maserattis, Ferraris or Porches. Same size but one is gutless and the others are snakes, masters of the fast strike.
Two faced is a good description, although one face has two very large cheeks and a large cleft down the center.

Who cares what Gollywood says about what you or I drive? Brain power is in even shorter supply there than electric power. My first Suburban, a 1990, got 8-11 mpg on premium fuel, while my 2002 Yukon gets 16-20 mpg on regular fuel! Good progress is being made despite what the left thinks (yeh, like they ever really think), or says.
I like my SUV and I have no intention of letting some hare-brained actor interfear with my enjoyment of it!
Paddle forward, kids

Nothing new about this. Remeber John Denver he made a comerical about saving gas as they filled the tank on his ranch in Coloradeo. Or the idiot from the Egales who wanted us to stop chopping down trees. He sang his protest as he played his piano (made out of chopped down trees) or his guitar(also from chopped down trees).

I replaced My Number 16 1989 Caddie that the Meth Heads Murdered with one a year older and it is heavier, longer and gets worse gas milage than the '89. I want to be in keeping with America in burning all the gasoline I can. Number 17 is a 1988 Fleetwood d'Elegance that is a huge car with a bigger ,non fuel- injected engine. It is a dark blue metallic one with a Roll-Royce Grill and I am getting to like it. Every time I get in it I think about the Arab Family that I am feeding with the gasoline I am burning. I am proud to help the economy like this and to fit right in with Mr. and Mrs. America now in the year 2003. Hollyweird people are imaginary and so I do not pay any attention to them nor do I watch the crap on TV that seems to be the mindless enertainment of the Sheep. If you watch them , you are paying them and I refuse to support the stupidity that comes out of California. I just wish we could throw NY and CA out of the Union and go back to 48 States. No Americans live in these awful places so who would miss them? BTW, I used to make my living out of four wheel drives, and I wouldn't have one as a gift.
