By Bill Gertz
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

* * Saddam Hussein is trying to shore up the loyalty of his military forces amid signs that not all his troops will fight against a U.S.-led invasion, the nation's top military officer said yesterday.
* * *Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also told reporters that U.S. military forces are prepared now for military action, as more forces are ordered to the Persian Gulf region.
* * "We're ready now. The Iraqi regime should have no doubt," said Gen. Myers.
* * Regarding indications of dissent in Baghdad, "there are some indications about unrest in some of the Iraqi leadership, but just hints," said Gen. Myers.

I'm sure they will react the same way this time around. They were willing to surrender to American journalists in 1991.

Once these people are out from under the threat of death by Saddam, I think we will see their true feelings surface. They are totally controlled and intimidated.

And these poor sods are going to whip up "the mother of all battles"? ÊWith what? ÊSticks?

I wonder if we shouldn't be entering the conflict with High-Density Catering (HDC).

You know, light bubbly drinks, some cool, refreshing snacks, some heavier hors d'oueveres, and friendly conversation aimed at recruiting Iraq's military into a Civil Engineering force. ÊTwo or three functions and I'll bet we could turn even the Republican Guard into a crack team of contractors.

The NEW Iraqi Engineering Corps might build swimming pools, water treatment plants, roads, bathouses, and host some afternoon parties and generally end this whole confllict scenario over cocktail weenies and spritzers. ÊAdd a small cover charge and we might break even on the deal!

And we won't invite the French. ÊThat'll teach 'em!
