Ottawa — Prime Minister Jean Chrétien declared Monday that Canada will not join the United States and Britain in waging war against Iraq, even as Canadian warships remained in the Persian Gulf together with a number of troops serving with U.S. and British forces.

In the Commons Monday, Mr. Chrétien rebuffed the U.S. and British position — saying there is no need for war now because Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein already faces enormous pressure to disarm.

Hours before U.S. President George W. Bush abandoned United Nations diplomacy and signalled his intent to launch an invasion if Mr. Hussein does not leave Iraq, Mr. Chrétien told the Commons that Canada will not participate in the looming war.

Quote[/b] ]The Prime Minister reiterated his assertion, first made during an interview last week on ABC TV, that war is unnecessary because Mr. Hussein is being forced to disarm under the pressure of 250,000 U.S. and British troops on his borders.

poor excuse for a leader really think that the US is going to keep 250,000 troops floating around the Mediterranean and living in tents in the desert for years while the UNinspectors lollygag around Baghdad looking for needles in haystacks. Perhaps "material breech" and "consequences" don't translate into French. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/fire.gif
