Scams: Military families’ new worry

April 17 — James Maness’ Alabama home is a four-color portrait of patriotism. Draped in red-white-and-blue flags — and yellow ribbons — until his sailor son William comes home. But James, his brother Jerry and families of the nearly 300,000 U.S. soldiers fighting Iraq now have something else to worry about: scam artists.
JERRY MANESS took the offending call: “We have a service where we can contact you every day by phone and give you the status of your son and his well-being.”
The voice on the phone asked for a credit card number with a charge of $100 a month for daily updates on William.
