WASHINGTON (GOPUSA News) -- Defense leaders recently briefed the media on Army training efforts relating to readiness for nuclear, biological, and chemical defense. Titled "Chemical and Biological Defense Readiness," the roundtable discussion comes at a time when some say that Saddam Hussein will use his arsenal of chemical and biological weapons on U.S. and coalition forces should they move against him.

Major General John Doesburg began the discussion with a description of his areas of responsibility including research; development of chemical, biological defense equipment; sustainment of currently fielded chemical and biological defense equipment; and homeland chemical and biological defense operations. He is also responsible for the eight chemical weapons storage sites within the continental U.S. and for the safe and secure storage of those chemical munitions until they are demilitarized.

Responding to a question regarding how the Army would deal with enemy capability with biological warfare, Doesburg emphasized the importance of asking, "First, Can they make it? Can they get what they need so that they can make a biological warfare agent? ... The next most difficult step is now you've got to be able to put it into a usable form."
