Decorated Vet Rips General for 'Hide the Uniform' Order

NewsMax
April 18, 2003

Members of the U.S. military, in San Antonio and everywhere, should be able to wear their uniforms with honor, pride and dignity.

But they've been warned against wearing them in public by their own commander, Maj. Gen. Darrel R. Porr.

Yes, you read that correctly. Our heroes can't wear in public what should be the finest piece of clothing any American could don.

And one Purple Heart veteran of an 18-month combat tour in Vietnam as a 101st Airborne Division paratrooper and a Green Beret with the 5th Special Forces Group, who is also a former Special Agent with the U.S. Treasury Department and has a master's in military history, thinks it is an outrage.

This reminds me of Vietnam and it doesn't make me one bit happy! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/fire.gif

http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag17.gif I heard this same story at least twice on the radio today. *I didn't hear about the *father being so upset and writing letters, just that the commanding officer on the base had ordered his people not to wear their uniforms out in public because of a couple of incidents where service personnel were accosted on the streets. *I don't know if it was serious or not. * I think it's a rotten shame, no matter what happened. *The incidents should be reported and every effort should be made to hunt down the wh@!e$h!t who think they have the right *to look down on our military, when they're not fit to even shine their shoes! *Pah! *

Hannity was talking about it yesterday. It'll get bigger. Here's a couple more links.

And it's made the Washington Times now.

http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag17.gif I would have told my troops to "take care of business" if one of the little punks tried anything. Personally I say have them wear their uniforms for several days out in town to show they're not intimidated. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

I agree. However, I can tell you that the Navy (as of several years ago) warns us against any commercial travel in uniform due to increased terrorism and/or threat of terrorism. Also, in the Navy (as in most branches as far as I'm aware) while overseas, we are not allowed to wear our uniforms off of a government facility or base due to the potential of a terroristic act against armed forces personnel.
As far as I'm concerned, within the confines of the United States, we (those in the service) should wear our uniforms in public more often to show solidarity and strength.

LOL, As a SEABEE (reserve, now), we get to do a lot of projects overseas, and sometimes get offers for security details. I love walking around in civvies with a 9mm concealed on me. Usually, if we're doing security in the Emirates, we'll stay in the cities in a nice hotel, wearing civvies, the works. Nothing beats tax free money doing a great lot of nothing while in luxury, you know? <SMILES>

Ah.. the joys of SP .. remember as a lowly E3 doing duty with grizzled MM1's , BM1's etc, in whites, the belt, the non-functional .45 acp, and the white helmet liner in ports like Hong Kong, Sasebo, Yokosuka, Manila, and that teeming cesspool, Olongapo, PI.

When you checked back into the MP shack, or liberty launch at 3 am, you almost had to burn the whites, due to the dirt/mud/beer/barf accumulated over the tour of duty. The worst hassel was on the last day of the ships' leave.. on the last boat back. As I was mostly carrier blue water, we'd have 100's of drunks to deal with on SP --and of course the fights with --ahem--Uncle Sam's Misguided Children and swabbies.
Can't say I ever enjoyed SP duty .. but Hong Kong it was civvies and the city was so large that the sailor population was dispersed to a degree, so bar patrol wasn't too taxing.
It was fun driving a navy Dodge pickup thru the narrow alleys on the wrong side of the road, tho, dodging the Mercedes Benz cabs and the guys on bicycles hauling pig iron and LP gas.

Hey.. Bill.. tnx for the email.. SeaBee's rock !!

Uh Rah!
