Daschle favors legalizing many immigrants

Washington, U.S., January 29, 2003 (EFE) - Using the word "legalization" - a term scrupulously avoided by the Bush administration - Senate minority leader Tom Daschle says Democrats will keep pressure on the president and congressional Republicans to fix the status of many of the millions of immigrants living unlawfully in the United States.

"It is very important to keep the pressure on the president to act on legalization. Lately he has been less than enthusiastic," the South Dakota Democrat told EFE in an interview.
"We need to get this done. We need to make it a high priority," he added.

His comments came as Mexico has begun to press more insistently for progress on the status of an estimated 3 million Mexicans living illegally in the United States, and as congressman Luis Gutierrez presented a bill providing for broad normalization of immigrants' status.

Daschle said he considers it a responsibility of the Senate to create a climate of particularly good relations with Mexico. If President George W. Bush does not take up anew the issue of Mexicans living in the United States, "Congress will have to assume that role," he added.

Like I said, its all about votes. We need to intensify our letter writing to make sure we knock down this latest initiative. I just got another reply from Sen John Edwards, in which he covers the importance of securing the country against terrorists, but also included the need to close the borders and address the illegal alien problem. The way it was worded you can't tell if addressing the problem means to get rid of them or make them legal.

Could there be any truth to the rumor that Tom Daschle is himself an illegal immigrant? He dosn't seem to understand what being an American is all about!

Unilaterally proclaiming 3 million illegal Mexicans to be legal would be a huge slap in the face to all the people from around the world who have immigrated to this country legally. These legal immigrants speak English, work hard to support themselves, and know more about U.S. history, government, and the Constitution than many of our politicians seem to.

Paddle forward, kids

I believe I just heard this morning that the illegal immigrant number is 7 million. I happen to think it's much higher than that.....but it's apparently much higher than 3 million. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

Saber, most of the groups that monitor the illegal problem put the number of illegals at somewhere between 9 and 14 million, with 3 to 5 million as hispanics. The latest figure that I have seen about illegals crossing the southern border is 1008 per day, and thats after the borders were "tightened" after 9/11.

Jeez, do suppose Daschle and Bush are "in cahoots"? They both want to give amnesty to the illegal aliens.
