View Full Version : Mexico Deploys More Troops to Border - U.S.nothing

As part of its preparations in girding for an Iraq war, Mexico deployed 18,000 troops to provide security at the U.S. border and at airports and other strategic sites, according to Mexican news agency Notimex. Mexican officials said the soldiers would be used to help prevent the infiltration of terrorists into the United States.

The Mexican operation, with its military component, contrasted with the U.S. security plan, known as Operation Liberty Shield. On March 19, U.S. Department of Homeland Security head Tom Ridge said that though border security is being stepped up, additional U.S. National Guard troops would not be moved to the border.

Say what we will about Mexico, at least they have sense enough to realize that part of their national security means protecting their borders; we haven't made that decision yet. Of course this will mean more armed incursions by Mexican soldiers, and probably more confrontations with U.S. law enforcement officers working on the border.
